Product description
180g heavyweight black LP in gatefold sleeve
elbow return in March with their tenth studio album, ‘AUDIO VERTIGO.’ Recorded throughout 2023 at the band’s home studios, Migration Studios in Gloucestershire, The Dairy in London and mixed at the band’s facility at Blueprint Studios, Salford, the album marks a significant step change for the group following 2021’s ‘Flying Dream 1’.
In the words of lead singer and lyricist Guy Garvey, ‘AUDIO VERTIGO’ was built from ‘gnarly, seedy grooves created by us playing together in garagey rooms’ and is both more direct and sonically varied by purpose that its predecessor.
The album includes the lead single Lovers’ Leap.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 March 2024Elbow do gentle, warm, beautiful music effortlessly. There has been the odd rush of energy and sass over the years (Forget Myself and Mexican Standoff from their third album "Leaders of the Free World", Grounds for Divorce from "The Seldom Seen Kid" and their 8th studio album "Giants of All Sizes" definitely had a darker, slightly more angry tone, certainly than they've had since the occasional tortured melancholy found on their debut "Asleep in the Back."
However, as Garvey has often proudly declared, most Elbow songs are love songs in one form or another, and like one of their mains inspirations, Radiohead, the default setting is thoughtful and introspective with poetic, intelligent and unflinchingly honest lyrics.
Guy Garvey is a true poet, a wordsmith par excellence, and nothing has changed on that front with Elbow's 10th studio album, "Audio Vertigo".
The music is a true departure, however. Drums and rhythm are the order of the day, and more splashes of electronica than ever before. It's a sexy, gnarly, urgent sound and where Elbow has always delivered gorgeous melodies, they're not renowned for "catchy" music, and Audio Vertigo is *catchy* almost all the way through.
Standout tracks for me include:
Things I've Been Telling Myself For Years - dark, self deprecating honesty and humour in the lyrics with a brooding, longing musical backdrop where the guitar almost sounds defeated and lonely. Such a clever intro song. An instant classic.
Lovers' Leap - Vocally very Peter Gabriel (not for the first time) and the percussion section here is funky, spitty, and full of attitude. Radiohead-esque but also uniquely Elbow too, with the denouement so musically and lyrically tender and beautiful. "Though there isn't an artist alive, who could get your eyes". Ugh.
Balu - the most single-y single on the record, punchy, catchy, with amazing lyrics. Only Guy Garvey could get the word "Plantagenet" into a song!
Her To The Earth - a gorgeous song with a wonderfully infectious rhythm, and an echo of Cast of Thousands/Leaders era Elbow. It's hard to explain why but it's a song that feels like it's existed for years!
Good Blood Mexico City - Elbow going for something unabashedly upbeat and straightforward. It has such a classic, sunny rock sound, and did I say Audio Vertigo was all about "catchy"? This song is probably the catchiest on the record.
From The River - such a lovely song to close, Guy's love letter to his son, with Pete's bass on fire, bright, infectious keyboard, and one of the most joyful melodies ever written by the boys. It's a bit Duran Duran / Tears For Fears, very 80s' new wave, but lyrically it's unquestionably Elbow, and it sounds both 35 years old and 35 minutes old all at the same time.
Audio Vertigo is Elbow as you've never heard them before but with reminders here and there underlining the fact that they're still the same band. They remain familiar but their greatest strength has always been that recognisable throughline being present without them ever repeating themselves.
On balance? I think their subtler, more tender stuff over the years is flawless and what has made me a life-long fan. That said, their foray into a whole album packed with bright lights, sass, energy, and a touch more aggression, has been a rip-roaring success.
They're superb musicians first and foremost, and Guy's lyrics have always and will always be one of the main draws for me. That's why it all works without skipping a beat. A terrific piece of work!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 June 2024The band always deliver. This is another excellent album, full of the usual array of stories and unique takes on life. Nice to hear some very good female backing singers, too. I have always liked Guy Garvey's voice and his mates instrumentaton. This is no different.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 June 2024Great, but a bit different from the normal Elbow sound.
The album is a bit more direct and 'in your face'. The drummer has added some input and it might be that that makes the difference.
I like it though, and it fits well in the band's cannon.
I recommend you give it a try.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 July 2024Brilliant Elbow at its best.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 April 2024Not been impressed with their last two albums but this one seems like a return to their earlier work.
It’s one of those album’s that require a few listenings, but it’s well worth it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 July 2024Great item.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 May 2024A definite change of pace after Flying Dream 1, but this is another excellent album from Elbow.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best albums in years, hands down
Elbow seems to reinvent themselves again and again. An electric, eclectic tour de force of voice and sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elbow mal anders
Klasse Songs, klasse Texte, super Drums...what's not to like?

5.0 out of 5 stars Guy Garvey and Elbow have released one of their best albums!
Love this Audio Vertigo! More uptempo with a variety of rhythms and percussion lifting this release with smart lyrics and perfect production and Guy singing is at its best. Depth melody and perfect performance!

PlattenbesprechungenReviewed in Germany on 1 April 2024
