From the manufacturer
All the episodes from series one to eight of Jimmy Perry and David Croft's It Ain't Half Hot Mum, first broadcast in 1974.
This period sitcom, created by David Croft and Jimmy Perry, seemed a natural follow-up to their smash hit Dad's Army. Another ensemble piece, it drew on both writers' wartime experience in India and set the action in Deolali: a British army camp 100 miles north-east of Bombay where everyone's gone "a bit doolally".
The concert party is a rag-tag collection of soldiers who'd rather sing, dance and drag up to entertain the military troops than be sent forward to the front line. Characters include effeminate drag artist Gunner 'Gloria' Beaumont (Melvyn Hayes); the diminutive Gunner 'Lofty' Willie Sugden (Don Estelle) who possesses a hauntingly beautiful singing voice and ineffectual Colonel Reynolds (Donald Hewlett). However, the show's stand-out personality is the bombastic, eye-rolling Battery Sergeant Major Williams (Windsor Davies).

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 October 2024Absolute classic show. Love it.
Some people have left negative reviews due to missing episodes, these are “lost episodes” so are not available regularly. However they can be found in the extras section on the DVD in lower quality.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 August 2024I doubt if you would buy this without knowing the tv programe. Therefore, it is what it says it.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 June 2024I always enjoyed this comedy series at the time it was originally shown - and I thought it was a good idea to buy this DVD box set so I could watch it again whenever I wanted to! It's still as hilariously funny now as it was was back in the day!

5.0 out of 5 stars More about the presentation.
Series just as I remembered. I have to say the case is good and the way the DVDs are presented with a single DVD per plastic page like a book, rather than multiple DVDs in a case, makes it easier to look after and protect the individual DVDs. Hard to explain, but it would be good if all DVD series came in this format.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic British comedy but you'll need a region-free player to watch it in this release. Definately worth the trouble.
To start, keep in mind two things: these are from a relatively old English series dealing with the English presence in India, and it's not particularly offensive but a bit touchy in today's enlightened times for some people; and these are mastered for a different region from North American. The latter is easily solved if you have one of the region-free DVD players (there are several excellent region-free Sony Bluray players available here on غ, and I have two that work flawlessly on these DVDs).
The video transfers show the age of the masters, with 4:3 aspect ration, but that's to be expected. The video and audio is fine for a series from the 80s. There's nine DVDs in the set, representing everything the series contained, including specials. I remember watching this on BBC (and in Canada) as a much younger person, laughing at Windsor Davis' portrayal of a Sergeant Major, and Gunner "Gloria", so watching the series again brought back a lot of great memories. And these videos are still funny, although some of the humour will appeal only to those with an English sense of humour, perhaps. Overall, a delightful trip down memory lane, and a great buy at this price for a classic British comedy.
