I was a little trepidatious when I saw some reviews about this movie, but I love the Alien franchise so braved it and bought the DVD for myself.

I'm so glad I did, I thought Romulus was fantastic! It harkens back to the feel of the original Alien, with a more grungy feel to the ship, and bridges into Aliens throw backs in the second half of the movie too, with more action.

It's not on a par with those two absolute classics, but it's certainly a worthy installment, especially when compared to some recent efforts in other franchises have fallen really flat.

If you're a big Alien fan, this is a worthy watch, and even if you're not, it's still a good film to pass a few hours with.

Having taken delivery of the DVD yesterday I have already watched it twice. The Dolby vision and the Atmos come together to make a brilliant movie overall. I have been an Alien fan since 79, some movies have received high praise and others not so much. The alien franchise needs all the help it can get these days and I honestly think that this latest movie has helped the overall credibility of our favourite extraterrestrial beastie. I do accept that Ridly Scott is the grandfather of the franchise however just like Simon Pegg should be kept away from story writing (Star Trek beyond) of my other science-fiction passion Mr. Scott must be reminded that other producers and directors may have new fresh ideas on which direction to take the franchise from here. Overall alien Romulus is a good blood dripping scary movie. 7.1.6

Disclaimer: I liked Prometheus. So there. Which I thought told an interesting story. It's a shame Covenant tried to go on with that and go fan pleasing alien stuff at the same time. Trashing what Prometheus had set up and not pleasing anyone as a result.

So now the franchise has to try something else. Which is a new story. Can be said without spoilers it's set between Alien and Aliens.

It has an opening scene which is rather like many books I've read. Where there's a prologue that doesn't feel as if it's anything to do with what follows. Yet if you bear with it things quickly make sense.

Lead character is Rain [Cailee Spaeny. Also seen earlier this year as Jessie in Civil War. I never realised it was her till looking at imdb just now]. Living and working on a Weylan Yutani mining planet, she looks after her brother Andy. Desperate to get away, she accepts an offer from four other individuals who need Andy's help to get into an abandoned company station and get things from there. They should be in and out in thirty minutes. What could possibly go wrong?

This grabbed me pretty quickly, because it makes you care for Rain and Andy right away. The main cast is small [including Isabella Merced. Who will be Hawkgirl in Superman next year] It does fill the other four characters in as it moves along. They do end up being three dimensional and rounded individuals. Also, I noticed the lighting right away. It's dark. But it's never too dark. You can always see what's going on. Which is nice.

Can't talk about the plot without spoilers. It does have a good story though. It fits itself firmly into this world continuity wise. It keeps things moving along. There are some very good set pieces and some very scary moments. The actor who plays Andy in particular shows some superb versatility.

There's some very impressive film making technology on display. Some wonderful space visuals as well. The shots you get are stunning. Some good physics involved also. The characters held my attention and I did want to see what was going to happen to them. It really does keep the tension going also.

    However:

The last act of this just goes on a bit too long. It could probably do with losing about five to ten mins for pacing during this bit. So that let it down just a little.

Even so, I had a really good time with this and thought it was a great experience. It's not quite as stand alone as Prey and Rain is a little less potentially vulnerable than Naru. But was still a very good lead.

Continuity can sometimes become fan service, but....nothing that this did hit the wrong mark with me. Spoilers.

Well worth seeing on the big screen. In the dark cinema and with a big screen, it was an involving experience. Really enjoyed this. Also I think what this franchise needed. Although any further films will need the same level of attention to make them work as well.

Nothing extra during or after the end credits.

The dvd goes into the main menu when loaded with no ads or trailers.
    There's no extras at all.

    Language and subtitle options:

Languages: English. Castilian Spanish. English audio description.
Subtitles: English. Castilian Spanish. Danish. Finnish. Norwegian. Swedish.

I don't hear proper sound on this dvd, I tried to watch it on my home cinema set and 1st choice of audio you cant hear them talking, just the surrounding sounds, also second set of audio you can hear someone describing what is being watched talking almost not stop - non watchable. I ended up watching this on my old laptop on simple speaker but whats the point describing it as dolby surround if it does not work ?

A difficult one for me to be objective. What/Who is/was the target audience? Is is aimed at teenagers? I certainly found the entire cast very disconcering. They looked (even if they are older) far too young, and jhow on earth, living the life we are shown, were they able to easily pilot complicated space craft. Navigate through miles of said craft with complete confidence. Didn't work for me. Though I did findCailee Spainey to be a good watchable lead, the rest were unpleasant, whiney and without character development. Also there is, as is so often the case now - a lot of the "F" word. It is getting quite hard to find a film/series without them!! All this negativity is a pity because there is a good basic plot. Excellent CGI/SFX, and a mysterious "monster/alien" at the climax that was very effective. Lastly...2 hours?? Way too long and it showed in the hard to follow prolonged "climax". A worthy attempt and many will thoroughly enjoy it far more than I did. Good picture, sound and subtitles. Extras not watched. P.S Some nice references to previous movies, and the best of all ...A lovely reconstruction!!! of Ian Holm as Ash (rook?). Added some real tension and gravitas
