Pretty good sound which was a bootleg way back then when I used to have it on cassette. Glad to finally have a CD copy and lovely packaging.

Slade's historic Reading appearance from 1980. Three songs are missing unfortunately. The opening Dizzy Mama was lost because of master tape damage. The music is faultless and you can imagine how Def Leppard felt having to follow Slade onto that stage after getting themselves up the billing.

The splatter vinyl sounds great and looks attractive.

The packaging on this album loses it a star for me. An early 1970's photo on the rear is just really lazy packaging.

Well this is the same bootleg bmg used when doing the boxset earlier in 2023 and it's still not correct.
You get Mr Holder saying to Charlie Swinnerton (foh sound man) that it isn't loud enough as he did at every gig prior to when I'm dancing and then miraculously again prior to born to be wild. As mentioned in the review for the boxset their are clearer versions available on the interweb of this gig. Save yourself the bother and get one of them. For completists only. I'm sending this one back

Bit disappointing, nice to have this on vinyl, but where’s the rest of it? Shurely should be a double album?

Slade are a truly underrated rock band and their triumphant performance at Reading Festival in 1980 deserves far better than this recent vinyl/CD offering from BMG. No quarrels with the actual music for this is a blistering performance from a band at the top of their game. However, BMG deserve to be called out... many of their recent Slade releases have been lazily handled in one form or another, with a clear motive of gaining maximum profit for minimal effort.

Firstly, this is still not the complete concert and is only what was broadcast on BBC Radio's Friday Rock Show. It would appear that the band's full performance was recorded by the BBC as Nod himself confirmed it in a 1980 interview for the Slade Fan Club. Even if the missing tracks aren't available in sufficient quality in the BBC archives, I doubt BMG even bothered to enquire. Far more alarming is that, for the tracks that are included here, there are better quality bootleg copies available on the internet!

The front cover looks great but I can not understand why the back cover features a 1973 photo of Nod and Don which has no relevance to this 1980 performance. There are lots of photos of the band at Reading available online for licensing but presumably BMG didn't want to pay for their use. Just as bemusing is the failure to even get the track titles correct. The medley track contains the title Keep It Rockin' when it should be Keep a Rollin' as per the Alive at Reading EP, released by Cheapskate Records in 1980.

I would recommend skipping this release. Besides, if you purchased last year's All the World Is a Stage set then you've already got these tracks anyway. It's just a shame BMG aren't showing the same level of care and dedication to Slade as Salvo did for their remaster series (compare their Live at the BBC release to this).

As a Slade pedant I will have to pass due lack of attention to detail by those persons responsible for producing this. Still got me cassette with Tommy Vance’s hyperbole inc - marvellous!

The sound quality of the recording is ok. I've heard worse, but I have certainly heard better. The performances are very good, but this concert is very much 'of it's time'. You can tell the band weren't very concerned with recording an album so much as their main job of entertaining and interacting with the audience. Overall, it's a nice snap shot of Slade at this low point in their career - still a great band but not doing well commercially. Heck, Slade on a bad day is still better than many top flight bands on a good day.
I bought it on vinyl. The record is so dished that I had to borrow an edge weight to play side one. Even increasing the tracking weight, my cart wouldn't track it otherwise. A center weight handled flattening it for side two. I was pretty disappointed with that issue. To be clear, dish warps are caused at the pressing stage; they are not the kind of warp found in improper storage/shipping.
Any way, the record was fairly inexpensive but, if you really want to hear it, I recommend the CD instead.
