The sound quality of Olivia's vocals on the entire album are dreadful. They sound like they have been recorded over a very bad '80's phone line! Quality control must have been drunk when they allowed this.
A terrible album to be associated with such a fantastic singer. Avoid this album!

I suppose it wasn’t a bad idea to reimagine some of Olivia Newton-John’s Christmas songs… She tended to be a bit ballad heavy in this area, so perkier arrangements would be worth a listen...

Thing is, in doing so, producer Sam Hollander has had to digitally manipulate Olivia’s original vocals to fit the new upbeat tempos. This has been done very poorly, with Olivia barely recognisable as a human being, let alone the singer she once was. Pretty much every song is wrecked making Olivia sound like she’s singing into a tin can or with her head dunked underwater. It really is remarkable how this was passed for commercial release. Vocals are shaky, fading in and out, and are often buried underneath Hollander’s loud, rather cheesy arrangements. Lots of backing singers and bells, if you like that sort of thing.

I can’t find one thing say in favour of this album. Even the cover picture, once a lovely black & white shot, has been badly colourised giving Olivia pink eyes and teeth, and a bright white forehead to boot! It really is enough to make you boycott Christmas altogether.

To any fans considering buying this, please give it a listen before you part with your money. I feel quite certain that if Olivia were alive this would have never seen the light of day. She surely wouldn’t have let it go out like this. It’s not a case of supporting Olivia if you purchase this... More like you’re doing her and her legacy a favour if you don’t!

If Olivia had been alive I don't think for one minute that this mess would have gotten passed her. Everything is a mess the remixes and the album cover. Don't buy this Olivia wouldn't have wanted you to.

Nice idea poorly executed

The idea of reworking previously-recorded tracks (in this case, various Christmas songs recorded by ONJ, mostly from her 2007 release, Christmas Wish) isn’t an entirely bad one - and to be fair, some of these arrangements add some energy and sparkle to the songs. However, this effort is NOT well done.

The problem lies in how Olivia’s vocals have been made to sound: since many have been sped up, they often sound quavery, tinny, and flat. Not how SHE sounded at all! They have used the original vocals (although it sounds like they’ve been digitally extracted from the original tracks) so the set isn’t entirely devoid of ONJ’s magic - but the production choices made here have robbed them of the warmth and natural tones that were the hallmark of Olivia’s voice.

There’s an excellent analysis of the title song, Angels In The Snow, on the Wings Of Pegasus YouTube channel and it’s worth checking that out - and streaming some of the other numbers - before parting with your hard-earned cash for this set. As Fil from Wings Of Pegasus points out in that video, this album makes it sound like Olivia is singing to us over the tannoy system at a railway station.

I’ve been a fan of Olivia’s for over 40 years and have bought almost every release - but I won’t be buying a physical copy of this, or recommending it to others, because I don’t think we should be encouraging this sort of poor-quality product in her name. She deserves MUCH better care of her legacy.

The deal she struck with Primary Wave in her final years has borne some pleasing fruit: the 40th anniversary deluxe edition of her seminal Physical album; the deluxe edition of her debut set, If Not For You; and the re-release of her two volumes of Greatest Hits. However, somewhere along the way, things have gone BADLY wrong.

In addition to this disappointing - and almost insulting - release, we’ve had albums like Long Live Love and Grace and Gratitude being reissued in ‘manufactured on demand’ format with bad photocopy-quality inserts; and key albums like If You Love Me Let Me Know and Soul Kiss being released - without bonuses - on picture disc format as their sole physical form (fine for vinyl collectors, but not for others).

Frankly, Olivia Newton-John deserves better than this. It’s true that her mainstream commercial chart career effectively ended in the mid-80s - but in her heyday she was one of the world’s top-selling pop stars; is still in the top 10 female singles artists on the Billboard chart; and remains a pop culture icon thanks to her movie roles in Grease and Xanadu and the phenomenal success of her Physical single. And all that in addition to her recognition in later years as an environmental activist, cancer advocate, and philanthropist.

She went on recording right up to a year or so before her passing, and so across her career there is a wealth of material just right for a proper re-release schedule. She deserves better curation of her legacy. Ideally, we should be seeing deluxe editions of more albums (on CD as well as vinyl) replete with the wealth of rare and unreleased material we know to exist.

At the VERY least, she deserves a comprehensive box set of key tracks, remixes, and rarities.

Come on Primary Wave - you started well, but seem to have lost your way and run aground. Time for a relaunch of your ONJ campaign - or a decision to license these releases to a company with more experience and track record of ably curating the work of an important artist like ONJ. Cherry Red, for example?

This isn't just a collection of songs from several of Olivia's Christmas albums repackaged on one new release...the songs are each remixed. And what I like about it is that several songs that were originally subdued, ballad type recordings have been given upbeat remixes, from a country feel to dance music vibes. Very cool. However, with a whole CD worth of space, this collection would have been even better if they had selected more songs from her Christmas albums and given them the same remix treatment.

I knew what this album sounded like via YouTube before I purchased it. So I knew the "producers" pitch-corrected her vocals (why??) Now her vocals sound like AI on these Christmas songs. There is absolutely no reason to mess with Olivia's vocals EVER! Plus they changed up the tempo of some of the sounds to make them "dance-versions". Who really wanted THAT? Perhaps it was necessary to mess with her vocals to change the tempo. The worst culprit is "Silent Night". What an abomination! So in the end I bought the vinyl version anyway, because it's such a nice looking album cover. I'll probably never play it, but I am happy to add it in my Olivia collection. Looking forward to the next deluxe CD release. As far as I am concerned, for the deluxe treatments, they can skip the 1972 release "Olivia", the "1973 release "Let Me Be There", and the 1974 release "Long Live Love", and jump right to 1975's "Have You Never Been Mellow" and the albums that followed that.
