No-one was able to answer the question of whether this would work under Windows 8.1 on an Asus laptop equipped with Thunderbolt but I was quite desperate for a super-quick solution so I gave it a go. And it works flawlessly (so far) without any set up trouble. I confess I hadn't read the description sufficiently to realise it was FW800 so I had to make an emergency last minute trip to Maplins to get a 800 to 400 cable (another £20), but on setting it all up and attaching a Canon XH-A1S video camera to it everything connected seamlessly and without any intervention or tweaking from me. It just worked. For anyone interested I am capturing using Sony Vegas Pro 13. Next challenge is to see if it will capture for up to an hour without dropping frames. Fingers crossed.

I'm a professional videographer with fifteen+ years experience of flaky firewire connectivity so my hopes were not particularly high, however I am delighted that I can continue to use this old camera as a capture device. It's sat in a box for two years and is probably unsellable now.

In my case the adapter has already paid for itself as yesterday I was asked to supply a third camera for a product launch event in 36 hours time. For a total outlay of fifty quid I am able to charge my client an additional amount many times more than my outlay. The alternative would have been to rent a third camera for several hundred, if I could get one at such short notice.

Next day delivery c/o Prime meant I ordered the adapter on the Friday afternoon and it arrived on the Saturday morning.

Despite all the good news, it's still rather expensive for what it is - but that's Apple for ya, and that's why I dropped a star :-)

      Recommended.

Item works very well. I have used it to transfer videos recorded on mini dv tapes with a Sony mini DV camcorder. You will need a FireWire / iLink cable. I got a FireWire 4 pin - 9 pin cable. The 4 pin end connects to Sony Camcorder and the 9 pin end connects to this Apple Thunderbolt adapter. In turn this thunderbolt adapter connects to a thunderbolt 2 port on your computer / Mac. If your computer/ Mac only has USB type C port, you will also need an Apple Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter which costs around £45. The whole set up works beautifully and has helped me extract videos stuck on mini DV tapes onto movies on my Mac and then transfer them to cloud storage. The only gripe I have is with the cost. The FireWire cable is generic and coated me around £6 but Apple charge a premium £25 for this FireWire to Thunderbolt adapter. As I pointed out above, if you also need a Thunderbolt 2 - 3 adapter, you will have to spend another £45.

I have an old Presonus Firestudio firewire audio interface and when new was over £300. Unfortunatly my pc running windows 10 was a little tempremental with it so I bought a new usb interface for it and the Presonus went on a shelf. I also have an old late 2013 but nicely specced up imac that runs Logic Pro and I thought it worth a punt to see if the Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter would work. Well it certainly did and the Presonus is now back in action. Fantastic. Even though the asking price seems a bit steep it was well worth it.

No issues with the connector itself apart from the usual Apple price gouging. What I really needed was a TB3->Firewire connector but they don't sell one and I couldn't find an alternative. So I got this and a TB3->TB adaptor. It all works fine to my firewire external raid and performs well. Just wish there was a more elegant way of connecting it all up. Living the dongle life with Apple kit. :-(

Bought this to get an old 3rd gen iPod up and running again, the 1/2/3 generation iPods need FireWire to restore as well as sync with iTunes however my late 2012 iMac doesn't have a FireWire port so I had to use the Thunderbolt port (first time I've used Thunderbolt since I bought the iMac new back in 2012) You will also need a FireWire 800 to FireWire 400 adapter but those cost under £10

**** Please note my iMac has the FIRST GEN Thunderbolt port **** Gen 1 and 2 Thunderbolt look the same as Mini Display port - Gen 3 Thunderbolt looks like USB C

So if you need this for old iPods you the chain to be like this:
iMac with Thunderbolt port > Thunderbolt to FireWire 800 - FireWire 800 to FireWIre 400 > FireWire 400 to FireWire 400 for 1st and 2nd gen iPods or FireWire 400 to 30pin for 3rd gen iPods

Reviewed in Italy on 20 March 2021

5.0 out of 5 stars Worked great for hooking up older camcorder
Reviewed in Canada on 14 February 2019
I used this adapter (as well as a firewire 400 to 800 adapter) to hook up an Panasonic PV-GS250 Camcorder to a windows 10 laptop that had a thunderbolt socket and it worked great.

Windows recognized the device (without the hassle of manually installing any drivers) and I was able to record video without issue. Very happy, as I thought I was out of luck having gotten rid of my older computers that had fireware ports years ago.
