    This may have been the last original Roxy Music studio album, but what a way to go out !.

    The album opens perfectly with "More Than This" which includes the quiet synth riff at the end, usually cut off on compilation albums. The next track "The Space Between" has an excellent, punch sound to it & then there's the delightful title track that follows.

    The running time may be short - just over 37 minutes - but the quality of this album really makes up for that. Excellent

    Having been a Roxy fan for years, and having Avalon on both vinyl and early CD, I was intrigued by the remaster CD. The original CD sounds great to me, but this remastered version is more like the vinyl original, perhaps even better. Don't shout and scream. As beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so too music is very much a personal opinion.

    Avalon is that Roxy Music staple I just can't seem to discard. (Have the same track record with Appetite for Destruction and Joshua Tree, two other CDs that regularly get tossed and repurchased.) The cover art evokes a misty Camelot ... the ten tracks (two of which are instrumentals), however, are smooth and sensual, yet contemporary. More Than This and Take a Chance With Me tease and hypnotize with their slow rhythms. Bryan Ferry's vocals are suave, gauzy, and nearly beg for the ear to bend closer to the player, then the sax, guitar, and synthesizers spin a smoky lounge ambience. It's a siren's croon. Only a matter of time before I purchase Bete Noire (again!) ... Seven Deadly Sins with David Gilmour (shh!) lending his guitar skills to the sway is the clincher.

    Wasnt a fan of Roxy Music in the 70's per se', then this STUNNER comes out in the 80's and WOW! Talk about a fine wine ageing well. In a decade that was frankly a disappointment (for me & many others) musically, this album was fresh air & wind for the sails in a sea of doldrums & ho-hums. Bryan Ferry at the top of his game, the album back-front front-back nothing short of a Masterpiece.

    Se ogni parabola ha il suo apogeo, "Avalon" lo è per quanto riguarda la carriera dei Roxy Music e del Bryan Ferry solista. Non che manchino altri episodi di valore, anzi. Però qui si raggiunge la perfezione formale dell'estetica Roxy/Ferry. Probabilmente aiuta anche l'eccellente rimissaggio: il CD sembra inciso oggi, le sonorità sono piene, avvolgenti, coinvolgenti. Per riprendere un'espressione abusata, qui la forma è il contenuto: una versione strumentalmente semplificata di questi brani suonerebbe come la Nona di Beethoven eseguita all'ocarina. Le melodie acquistano valore anche in virtù degli arrangiamenti. Musica estetizzante? Ma certo! E' proprio per questo che ci piace. Non c'è da capire o da analizzare troppo, bisogna solo lasciarsi andare al flusso, godersela. Jackie Gleason diceva che la sua musica, parte essenziale di quella che oggi si chiama "lounge", per intendersi, doveva dare a chi la ascoltava la sensazione di stare vivendo in un film, almeno per una sera. Qui è la stessa cosa: Ferry e compagni ti fanno sentire intrigante, affascinante, bellissimo/a e possibile, senza trucchi o bisogno di rinforzi artificial/alcoolici. E' qualcosa che parte da dentro e che loro semplicemente risvegliano. Mata Hari, Rodolfo Valentino, tu. Chi, io ?!? Prova e vedrai.
