Product description

¡°Emil Gilels stands out as giant among giants,¡± wrote Gramophone when the Odessa-born pianist died in 1985. ¡°In terms of virtuosity he was second to none, yet his leonine power was tempered by a delicacy and poetry that few have matched and none has surpassed.¡± Beethoven was at the heart of Gilels¡¯ repertoire and in 1968 he recorded this complete cycle of the composer¡¯s piano concerto with the Cleveland Orchestra and its long-standing maestro, another musical titan of the era, George Szell.

So happy to come across Emile Gilel¡¯s performance of Beethoven¡¯s piano concertos. Even though it was recorded in 1968, his sensitive piano playing has not been surpassed (to my ears).

This is one of the most famous recordings of the Beethoven piano concertos, bringing one of the 20th century's greatest pianists together with one of the truly great conductors and the superlative Cleveland Orchestra. The results have always divided opinion, and if the performances are less than the sum of the parts they are nevertheless still excellent. There seemed to be some artistic tension between the old school approach of Szell and the more lyrical style of Gilels. Gilels is brilliant, and the Cleveland Orchestra plays with that sense of utter perfection that typified them under Szell. The problem is that in parts it feels slightly like the orchestra is driving a steamroller through the less driven approach of Gilels. If that sounds a bit negative I would also say that it also needs some perspective, if the performances are not quite what we might have hoped for if looking at the sum of the parts they are also a cut above most alternatives, never less than interesting and the innate brilliance of Gilels, Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra are obvious.
The recorded quality is fine and doesn't detract from the performances despite being over 50 years old.
Although this review may sound lukewarm this is an iconic set that any lover of Beethoven should own. Not quite perfection but extremely good.

I have a number of the Beethoven Concertos, some of my most loved music. Emil Gilels was a master interpreter. He brings lyricism then grandeur to Beethoven which few pianists achieve. My favourite pianist has always been Wilhelm Kempff but I have to say in both his recordings I have found the orchestras not in sympathy with him. In this recording I find the Cleveland Orchestra bright and clear so you can pick out each segment of the orchestra - so often this is not possible.
The recordings were made in 1968 and are in stereo. I would certainly recommend these plus the Kempff recordings of course. But all three and compare and always enjoy some of the finest piano music ever written by The Master. Sit back and enjoy,

Brilliant. The sound quality on this is wonderful given it's age. If you are reading this you are probably already a fan of Gilels. If you are not you should listen to this set of CD's. I am pretty sure that you will be a fan of this wonderful pianist after doing so.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is good to have these recordings available again in the collection ...

It is good to have these recordings available again in the collection replicating what was issued back in 1968. I wish that Warner had used the cardboard box format instead of plastic... The sound of Gilels / Szell / Cleveland Orchestra is far superior to what we had on the Angel LPs way back when - one had to find the EMI imports for decent sound in those days.
