Product description
Sebastian Faulks’ epic love story set against the First World War, which became a modern classic when it was published in 1993, is adapted for the screen for the first time by Abi Morgan. The action of the two part film moves between 1910 and 1916, telling the story of Stephen Wraysford (Eddie Redmayne), a young Englishman who arrives in Amiens in Northern France to stay with the Azaire family and falls desperately in love with Isabelle Azaire (ClémencePoésy). They begin an illicit and all-consuming affair, but the relationship falters. Years later, Stephen finds himself serving on the Western Front in the very area where he experienced his great love. As he battles amidst the blood and gore of the trenches he meets Jack Firebrace (Joseph Mawle), a tunneller who unexpectedly helps him endure the ravages of war and enables him to make peace with his feelings for Isabelle.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 May 2012This is a wonderful story written by Sebastian Faulks and brought to the screen by the BBC in an amazing adaptation.
The setting of the War scenes was brilliant although there has been critisism that the landscape was too dry whereas in the war, the landscape and trenches were very rainsoaked most of the time. This film is Sebastian Faulks interpretation of this era and I thought the set was realistic and amazing in it's authenticity.
There were flawless performances by all of the actors, which also reflects the brilliance of the film's Director, Philip Martin.
To me, Eddie Redmayne's performance as Stephen Wraysford was perfection on screen. He brought just the right amount of sensitivity of feeling in his relationship with his host's wife, Isabelle,{stunningly portrayed by Clemence Poesy}excitement and sensuality, but also he displayed strength of character, almost to the point of being harsh and unfeeling in the scenes in the trenches, which, of course , that is how Stephen survives because of this enduring inner strength. Also his relationship with Jack Firebrace,{superbly played by Joseph Mawle}teaches him in a way to come to terms with, and endure the ravages of war, and eventually finding a way to understand and come to terms with his feelings for Isabelle. A difficult book to condence into two episodes, but the BBC contrived to do it by using the flashback scenario very effectively.
I am very fond of the book and read it more than once, so I was going to be quite critical of the adaptation if the essence of the book was not interpreted well. I need not have worried. I feel that the BBC have captured this amazing story to perfection and Eddie Redmayne's performance deserves an oscar.
The DVD is new and very good value for money. throughout the sales transaction, communication and service were first class.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 January 2012I totally disagree with this other reviewer who was quite harsh on 'Birdsong'. I haven't read the book, I'm not a great fan of Faulks and I usually hate stuff that deals with wars. So I thought I would in all likelihood dislike it and yet, the film worked its magic. I ended up loving that first part. I enjoyed everything or very nearly, the slow but intense way the seduction between those two protagonists develops, the lazy shots of those sultry summer days contrasting sharply with life in the trenches. I don't think I had ever seen Redmaine before and thought he looked so young, so boyish that he would fail to deliver but he didn't. The attraction between the two is more than believable, the looks subtly exchanged and the beautiful photography reminded me of some excellent scenes in the Go Between for example. The hour and a half just flew by and I ended up enchanted. Of course I don't know if the second part will be as good but I can but hope. My only criticism is that some of the dialogue between the soldiers is really difficult to understand, mumble, mumble, mumble. I wish they enunciated properly! It is perfectly possible to have a strong regional accent but be audible at the same time.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 February 2014This is as close as you are going to get to the book in film, but there were some scenes left out of the film from the book that I thought would have worked well on film, why leave out the parts about his granddaughter? Nevertheless it is beautifully acted by all the characters and just as I imagined from the book. All in all pretty good but could have included more from the book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 June 2018A fine film. The principal characters are well portrayed, but I thought Eddie Redmayne was wimpish, and his character paled beside that of his army colleague Firebrace, who was entirely believable and the real hero of the conflict. The battle scenes were epic, and the scenes of the tunnellers who worked underground beneath the trenches were truly terrifying ! I cannot recall ever having seen a more dramatic example of film which induced feelings of claustrophobia. One serious criticism.: The film soundtrack was of variable quality, and there were several scenes (not only the battle scenes) where it was difficult to follow the dialogue. The novel by Sebastian Faulks was a classic, and the dialogue was an important element in defining the relationship between the principal characters and in the development of the plot. It is a pity that the film soundtrack was lacking in clarity, the story deserved better treatment. That said, it is a very moving and impressive film, and one which I shall want to see again.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 May 2012Beautiful, sad, overwhelming. I loved the novel but thought this adaptation brilliant too. Was left numb for several days by the intensity - rather like Stephen when he visits Jeanne after hearing about Isabelle. So sorry for Stephen, trying to understand the woman he loves. So sorry for all the young men thrown into industrial scale slaughter. The pace is slow, deamlike in places -surrender to the experience. Then watch it again and see so much more such as the soldiers back from the front playing football, heartbreakingly young. Wonder at the awesome skill of the actors. Be mesmerised once more.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 March 2016Meh. It is what it is. If you have already read the book you will see just how much of the book they left out. To it's credit it is well-shot and acted, but it isn't as powerful as the book. Obviously for the film they had to concentrate on the love-interest to the detriment of the other plot-lines. I recommend you read the book, which is 4 or 5 stars (depending on your level of understanding critical theory- sorry, bitter English Lit student coming out!) If you're never going to read the book, it is worth watching the film anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars Llegó el primer dÃa del plazo
