After a couple of blood tests revealed high LDL Cholesterol I was advised by my GP to go on statins. Have heard lots of negative reviews of this drug so didn’t fancy it. A nutritionist recommended Red Yeast Rice as a good natural alternative.

I've been taking the Ultra Premium Red Yeast Rice with CoQ10 & Alpha Lipoic Acid for a few weeks now, and I feel that the results have been quite impressive, but this could be because I’ve been away in the sunshine. This supplement combines red yeast rice with CoQ10 and alpha-lipoic acid, creating a powerful formula for heart health, cholesterol levels, and overall well-being. I’ve been concerned about my Cholesterol levels and heart health for some time, but I am not yet ready for something too intrusive. I needed to lower my Cholesterol & Triglycerides and really didn't want to take stains, so I opted for the natural alternative. I have just come out of hospital after a 2 week stay with horrendous liver inflammation. I was very unwell. The doctors assumed it was Gallstones or hepatitis, but scan after scan showed there was no sign of any stones. They were quite flummoxed. However, I have since read that there have been other cases very similar to mine where the patient had been taking Red Yeast rice. I also continued to have my glass of red wine in the evening, DO NOT drink alcohol while taking this supplement as this could aid the problem of liver damage caused by Monocolin K. which is what I suspect I had/have. Please just be careful when taking this supplement as I really wouldn't want anyone to go through what I have just been through!

Precis (TL;DR): Average dose, very poor value. Be aware of potential side effects.

If you want to skip this next bit of general info, jump to “THIS PRODUCT” a few paragraphs down.

Both with food supplements for which there are no Recommended Daily Allowances (RDAs, also known as Nutrient Reference Values, NRVs) and vitamins for which there are it is hard to make value for money comparisons; dosages vary hugely by manufacturer, and yet each warns you not to take more than “their” recommended dose. Eh? In the end all you can do is seek out the best medical and nutritional information you can and then make your dosage choice, always remembering that “more” is not always the same as “better”, and that in any case manufacturer’s claims of “more” (typically by putting huge numbers on their labels) may be misleading.

There are a few other things you need to look out for when shopping around. These can often be highly confusing.

(1) “Servings” vs individual pill strength. Unlike medicines such as aspirin, where the active ingredient quantity per tablet must be shown on the label, the strengths shown on the labels of supplements usually refer to their recommended serving, NOT each tablet. Thus an identical bottle of 60 x 500mg tablets might be differently labelled and sold as “500mg Dose” (serving: 1 tablet, 2 months supply), “2000mg Maxi Dose” (serving: 4 tablets, 15 days supply), or even 30,000mg Ultra Dose!” (serving: 60 tablets, 1 days supply). The prices will be different, but it’s exactly the same product in exactly the same quantity every time.
(2) For the same reason you might be fooled into thinking that a big tub labelled “1000mg, 60 tablets” for £10 is better value than a competitor’s “1000mg, 30 tablets” for £9 – but if the first tub contains 500mg tablets and the second 1000mg tablets, both give you precisely the same dose over the same number of days and the second is better value. For this reason you can’t rely just on the “£x.xx / count” (ie, how much each tablet costs) figure given by ��غ�� beneath the bottle price; each tablet may be 10p but your daily dose cost may be more (that’s the industry’s fault, not ��غ��’s). It’s that daily dose cost you need to compare, and they deliberately don’t make that easy for you.
(3) On the label you may see words such as “concentrated”, “extract”, or “equivalent”, and lots of different numbers. This is because the manufacturer usually takes the basic dried plant ingredient (say, 1000mg of milk thistle) and concentrates it to make a swallowable pill. Thus a pill might contain 50mg of plant extract but advertise itself using the pre-extraction plant weight of 1000mg. However, once more things can get sneaky; one manufacturer’s label claims that their pills contain 4000mg of EXTRACT but only reveal via an asterisk and small print that it’s actually 4000mg of original plant equivalent. Those are very different things; at a 40:1 concentration ratio that’s actually just 100mg of extract. I don’t know how they get away with it. The honest way of putting it is “100mg of plant extract, equivalent to 4000mg of whole plant”.
(4) Concentration ratios vary; a 50:1 concentration is five times stronger than 10:1, so it’s that original plant equivalent weight which matters when comparing; one manufacturer’s 50mg of extract may contain less original plant than another’s 20mg. For this reason, in my value for money comparisons it’s the original weight which I use.
(5) Headline ingredients (eg milk thistle) are often combined with others (eg artichoke, dandelion), making direct comparisons harder.
(6) Right; with no further delay, on to...

THIS PRODUCT

Red Rice Yeast Extract is derived from white rice fermented with the yeast Monascus purpureusis. It has long been used in China both as a health product and as (eg) a food colouring. Its primary use in the Western food supplement market is as a cholesterol lowering agent.

Its principal active ingredient is Monacolin K. This is marketed in the medical world as the statin lovastatin which appears in several brand name prescription medicines. It therefore has the same risks and side effects.

Monacolin K is known to reduce bad cholesterol but side effects can include damage to the liver, kidneys, nervous system, muscles and connective tissues, some of these even at doses of just 3mg, which is probably why most of the Red Rice Yeast products available on ��غ�� hover just below this figure (eg 2.8mg, 2.9mg, 2.95mg). For this reason, too, it is illegal to sell in supplement form in the USA and is becoming increasingly regulated in the EU, with several countries putting their maximum permitted dosages at 10mg and others still deciding.

Personally I will not be taking these tablets as my liver already takes enough of a beating from beer.

All 6 of the ��غ�� available products I have used in this comparison contain similar other ingredients to this one (Insynergy), eg the antioxidant enzyme CoQ10. They all hover just below that magic 3mg figure for Monacolin K, with Insynergy at 2.96mg and the others at 2.8, 2.9 or 2.95. For ease of comparison I have averaged out the cost for a 3mg dose of Monacolin K across all of the tablets in a bottle to give that value for money marking; this is close enough to each product’s dosage as to make no material difference in your decision making.

Insynergy’s 3mg (from 2 tablets; all others are achieved with 1) comes out at 52p per day. This is very poor, with the others costing you 27p, 21p, 17p, 12p, and 4p; that latter would save you £175 per year.

So I can’t recommend this product on value for money alone.
