Product description
Lise Davidsen, the most in-demand soprano in the world, releases 'Christmas From Norway' 10 November 2023. Lise's forthcoming album presents a delightful and personally-selected collection of traditional Norwegian Christmas music and classic festive favourites, spreading the warm glow of the Scandinavian Christmas spirit. For this album, the soprano draws inspiration from the classic albums of iconic predecessors on Decca Classics, such as Kirsten Flagstad and Birgit Nilsson. The album features beautiful arrangements drawn from the label's archive, originally made for such legendary singers as Luciano Pavarotti, Leontyne Price, and Renée Fleming.

I found this Christmas selection enchanting, sung simply but ,yes, beautifully by one of the world's greatest voices. Davidson has wowed me in the opera house in Tannhauser and Don Carlo, but here we are close to Lisa Davidson's Norwegian background and where it all began.
Lise Davidsen has a very "pure" voice. An enjoyable disc, sung in several languages, so all the more interesting. A good addition to a Christmas CD collection.
The best tunes are the lesser known ones which are beautifully sung. It's a shame they couldn't all have been these and in Norwegian as the covering of the classics, while done well, feels less exciting.
I love true dramatic sopranos and especially the Scandinavian variety, think Flagstad, Nilsson, and, greatest of all, Astrid Varnay and Lise is very much in this mold but here the glorious full sound is seldom unleashed even in the Adam ( given twice). The well known pieces are sung straight with no descants or flourishes and it's all terribly one paced, slow, very slow. In the end therefore dull though the " unknown" Scandinavian pieces are beautiful and worth hearing. Davidsen freely admits that it's not meant to be showy so, fair enough but I did immediately turn to Dame Joan's " Joy to the World" and Leontyne Price's Christmas album for some full voiced ecstatic Christmas joy!
Listened to Lise's Christmas album in its entirety.
It's a winner.
What comes through is that inborn element of sincerity and reverence in doing her work.
She clearly loves this music. All of the pieces are done with unerring good taste.
Lise fines down her immense voice with admirable skill and discretion. She does not allow the tonal fullness to overwhelm these Christmas carols and songs. Her most special, sweet, spiritual tonal sound is utilized; and the result is magic. Above all, there's no use ever of that bloated sound many opera singers use in this sort of music.
It's great to hear the (to me) unfamiliar songs in her own language.
She reserves the high register of her voice for the very end in "O Holy Night," and it's glorious, ending the recital in a fitting way.
