My parents recently wanted to view some old VHS tapes. This of course proved impossible as their old VHS player generates an analogue signal which their modern digital TV can't 'see'.
After some reading I reckoned an RCA to HDMI converter was the way to go.
This device was simple to set up: jack leads into VHS player, power cord for the converter is a ubiquitous USB connection, and finally HDMI into TV.
After selecting the correct source from the TV's input menu the best I could get was a simple blue screen. Wouldn't recognise the signal and wouldn't produce a picture.
This might work for you, but I'm going back to the drawing board.

I wanted to connect my old Bose 321 system to a Samsung smart monitor with only HDMI ports.
After doing a bit of research I decided to go for this little box. Plug and play and takes its power via USB lead plugged into one of the USB sockets on the back of the monitor. Turned on the Bose and after figuring out how to kill the sound on the monitor everything worked well.

Picture quality may not be up to today's HD standards but the Bose head unit is 17 years old.
