Original and best of the red dawn films, Just wanted to let anyone who wants to add this to their collection know that even though on the back cover it shows region A this Blu-Ray plays on a U.K. player.

I could vaguely remember this film from my youth, so I thought why not at the price. It was everything I remember, cheesy acting, Soviet paranoia,American Bravery winning out.
It is a thoroughly enjoyable romp, The plot of a Soviet/Cuban? attack on the US is so far fetched, but America at the time would have believed it possible. Has anyone seen Doomsday Preppers on NatGeo, that lets you know what the state of mind of some US citizens is today.
What bothers me is I cannot place the Russian villain, he was in loads in the 80's and always a bad guy.
    WOLVERINES!!!!!! Got to love it.

Having looked at many of the other reviews here, I have to admit that this film is hardly an accurate depiction of what could have happened during the Cold War. Yet, despite being escapist and a blatant advert for conservative politics, there are some interesting lessons to be learned here.

Although the idea of a group of largely teenage partisans wreaking such havoc is far fetched to say the least, the basic dilemmas of both fighting insurgents or mounting a guerilla campaign are demonstrated quite well here. The initial reprisals, perpetuating the cycle of atrocity and counter atrocity are demonstrated quite well.

The arrival of a Soviet expert in counter insurgency is also well handled and credible. Up to that point the Soviets are generally portrayed as rather evil (with one exception) but it becomes a little more ambivalent at that point. While the invaders are shown executing civilians etc, the partisans eventually end up shooting prisoners and even one of their own who betrays them. Although this film is unashamedly pro-American, the partisans aren't shown as pure minded heroes but are depicted in a far more ambiguous light, which is realistic.

Admittedly this is an action film and laughably unrealistic in places but it has its moments and certainly gives a good impression of the basics of insurgency warfare. For example, Patrick Swayze preparing to ambush a supply column with his fellow partisan about to fire an RPG about less than a foot away from his face was ridiculous (he doesn't actually fire in the end but even so). Likewise, the firefights are shown at very close range and the rapidity that late teens learn how to handle GPMGs etc is barely credible. Nevertheless, the problems the partisans encounter in just feeding themselves are well portrayed and everyone looks realistically scruffy towards the end (at least by Hollywood standards).

I didn't think that the performances were that bad to be honest. Some of the dialogue is rather memorable actually and the whole film stuck in my mind for a very long time after I first saw it in the eighties. The storyline was very engaging and, though the ending is very emotive and highly patriotic, I liked it. The action scenes weren't that realistic but what do you expect from this kind of film? It's not a documentary after all.

This film is a bit of an escapist, right wing cartoon but I think it has some merit and certainly found it very enjoyable.

Bought both versions, so that I could compare them. I must say I really preferred this version rather than the Chris Hemsworth version. The newer version is more up to date with North Korea as the villians of the peace but sadly it just does not cut it.

This classic film sets the scene with America being invaded by Mexican troops, as the Soviet Union makes one last stand before falling under its own weight. The DVD box promises that the opening scenes are on of the most 'shocking opening's in cinema history', when really they are just setting the scene, with lots of shots of a quaint old American town, when suddenly paratroopers fall from the sky.

Why the Russians chose to start their invasion with small town America is beyond me. The film then does its best to demonise the evil Russians whilst showing our heroes as being able to launch a guerrilla attack on a well armed and trained fighting force with no causalities for the majority of the film. And why they are allowed to then keep going in and out of town whilst being known resistance fighters makes no sense whatsoever.

Yet this film is quite funny in it's own way. It's clearly designed to instil American patriotism, and it's funny because of that. And one scene where the boy's father asks him to "AVENGE ME" whilst being in no serious position of harm is laugh out loud funny.

So, in summary, watch for the 80's cheese, not the plot.

5.0 out of 5 stars A possible fiction story.
Reviewed in Canada on 7 December 2024
The film is dated so 4 stars is realistic, but 5 stars given for the people acting, directing, writing, are all part of an era with experience with our past history on war thus the acting is believable compared to the reboot version where the actors are just hired to act with no emotional experience to input.
Spoiler Alert: The original Russian invaders is logical where new reboot has North Koreans - unrealistic to stupid - and should have been Chinese.
This original Red Dawn is a great film for teenagers to think about a 'What if' scenario. With multiculturalism watering down our patriotism, this film is also a reminder of our dying civilizations' future and we need to be prepared to the possibility of a takeover. More so in Canada than the US, but North America as a whole.
