Having seen a lengthy documentary of the moodiest on Sky Arts, I decided to revisit their albums. Begun with this and I highly recommend it. Frank, Rep of Irl.

This album was intended as a showcase of the effectiveness of Decca's new 'Deramic' stereo (?) in capturing both "classical" and "popular" performances. Enter the London Symphony Orchestra under conductor Sir Peter Knight, and a foundering five piece band who had been signed up by Decca for a considerable sum at the height of the Brit R&B movement, and had thus far failed to recoup the cash pump. The suggested concept was a kind of crossover arrangement of Dvorak's 'New World Symphony'. The Moody Blues however, persuaded Decca and conductor Knight to let them put down the conceptual song suite they'd been working on, and then add the appropriate 'orchestral' embellishments afterwards. This resulted in the unusual combination of the band's own music and Knight's musical interludes that make up the final record.

Its perhaps a testament to the melodicism of the group that Knight, likely unused to taking the lead from a "rock" band, finds much to do with the key motifs from their songs. There are incidences where his arrangements effectively build on the big melody lines of the band (perhaps most notably on the orchestral codas of both 'Tuesday Afternoon' and 'Nights in White Satin). It is where Knight attempts to match the concept on his own terms that the record often falls down. While many of the linking passages are musically fine, and do indeed match the appropriate mood, they also tend to recall the over-embellished, jaunty 'program music' of contemporary radio, dating the record rather a lot.

As would become the norm (whether for the sake of democracy or not, I am not prepared to guess!), a Graeme Edge poem opens and closes the album. Sadly, thats about all there is to say, as they are really nothing too inspiring. 'Dawn is a Feeling' is a rather nice waltz-time piece that suddenly pumps a contemplative atmposphere into proceedings, helped by a rich vocal. 'Another Morning' is rather lighter, and has a great chorus ('Time seems to stand quite still / In a child's world it always will'). Some rave about 'Peak Hour', the most overtly rocky piece on the album, but personally it never really made much of an impression on me, in spite of a rather nice Hollies/Zombies baroque mid-section. 'Tuesday Afternoon' is effective both in atmosphere and melody, with a typically yearning Hayward vocal. 'Evening', the second part of the 'Afternoon' section, with its Cream-like high vocals, is another melodically rich piece. 'Sunset' marks a stark change of mood, with sparse, booming percussion and an insidious indian-tinged melody line. 'Twilight' is pretty cool - an ominous, drone-like piece that always reminds me of Syd Barrett, particularly in its strident, unaffected lead vocal. That just leaves 'Nights in White Satin', a spaceous, thoughtful ballad that still holds a singular appeal after more than 40 years of consistent radio play. Overall, the bands songs all work, at the very least, as mood pieces and, at their best, as great "rock-pop" songs.

The star of the show? Mike Pinder and his gorgeous mellotron! Adding an air both melancholic, and ethereal to the bands pieces while adding lovely melodic touches to each song. I can't help but think it would have helped cohere the album had this element been brought into Knight's interludes - tying the pieces together with more than a melodic thread.

So... an album full of good music and fine performances. It has not dated as well as other notable 'psych-inflected' album releases of the year, but nonetheless an intriguing, melodic listen that provides a unique early classical/rock hybrid. Those expecting something edgy and 'trippy' in true late sixties lysergic fashion, may be disappointed. Those wanting good melodies and a lovely, gentle, flowing record probably won't.

    Wonderful,groundbreaking album
I sometimes find the Moodies either middle of the road or just plain silly (listen to In Search of The Lost Chord) and at other times they write beautiful melodies that really catch the ear and transcend pop music.
However this, their first album with all the later members is completely wonderful.
The orchestrations are first class and the songs melodic, beautiful and uplifting.
There are many extras like Justin Hayward's Fly Me High on this disc that make the CD an excellent buy and I have really enjoyed repeated listening.
At this stage, when the Moodies were still fresh ,Mike Pinder's mellotron is still understated and his compositional facilities undoubted.HIs song Dawn Is A Felling is ,in my view,on of the great classic songs of the 1960's .As is of course,Hayward's Nights In White Satin.

Back in the 1960s (yes, I admit it: I really am that old) Days of Future Passed was never one of my most favourite Moody Blues albums. But having bought the remastered digital version and listened to it again on a decent sound system (rather than the tatty Bush record player I had back then) I've been blown away by the technical quality of the Deram recording and by the freshness of the sound. Concept albums often don't age well, but this one is definitely an exception. The songs seem better than ever and Peter Knight's accompanying score for the London Festival Orchestra has that timeless quality of a true classic. Maybe I should start an online campaign to have the album voted into Classic FM's Hall of Fame. Now there's a thought...
