Product description
Includes all 31 episodes from all 5 series of the 1990s BBC comedy starring Jasper Carrott and Robert Powell.
Accidentally promoted far beyond their level of competence, Detective Constables Bob Louis and David Briggs stumble from crime to crime relying on a unique blend of intuition, hunches and inspired guesses... all of them hopelessly wrong. Incompetent, inept and usually in trouble, these bungling bobbies seem more likely to catch a cold than any Mr. Big, but somehow Superintendant Cottam always finds himself awarding them commendations.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 July 2024I used to watch this every week when it initially aired back in the day. I also watched Jasper's show and looked forward to The Detectives vignettes that were on there. Best part of the show for me. So when I heard it was being made into a proper sitcom I was excited. It arrived right in the middle of my high school days. This sitcom was made when the whole girl-boss nonsense wasn't shoved into peoples face like it is today in a lot of entertainment.
What we get here in this sitcom is pure escapism the way it's meant to be. It is mostly a lads based show with mostly male cast members. There are women involved in storylines and they are not poorly written. But it is kind of a guys show kind of like Red Dwarf and Bottom are. Oh I am not saying it's not for girls haha of course it can be. I bought the original box set years ago which is a black cardboard box with the cases in it. Then I got the latest box set as well. Now I have the show on Prime Video. I wish they'd bring a future box set out with all of The Detectives vignettes from Jaspers show in the extras. They're not available sadly. That or give them a release of their own.
This is a show ideal for viewing at any time of the morning, day or even night. My sister even bought a box set of this last week. She remembers some of it from back in the day. I have talked her into starting her own sitcom collection. She'll get there eventually. She used to watch a lot of the shows I watched when we were growing up in the 90s. Red Dwarf. Married With Children. The Detectives. Etc.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 August 2024This is great if you want a different take on how cops would solve crimes in the comedic way.
This stars Robert Powell very serious actor show his comedy chops along with Jasper Carrot as 2 hapless detectives who in their own unique way manged to get the bad guy!
Also if you love original Bergerac then you're going to love a episode that sends them to the island of Jersey where they interact with John Nettles as Bergerac and Terrance Alexander as Charlie Hungerford that shows how they manage to keep a straight face whilst faced with the inept detectives who think they are on holiday.
If you want a laugh then watch this forgotten gem that's never been reshown on tv since it first aired.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 October 2024Very satisfied with this dvd as it was delivered quickly
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 October 2024I always watched this when I was younger, I still find it hilarious now.Would definitely recommend.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 October 2024A brilliant watch. Some classic moments that are timeless
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 September 2024What a brilliant way to relive one of the best sitcoms in its day. Unlike some, this has aged pretty well with very few references to upset the PC brigade. Carrot and Powell play two largely incompetent but well intentioned detectives. Sewell is their long suffering boss. Each episode sees them involved in what should be a straightforward situation go horribly wrong.
Their timing is superb, the jokes are simple. Some visual, some through clever scriptwriting but it all gels. It’s harmless fun. No poking fun at women or ethnic minorities, just simple screwball humour. 31 episodes from all 5 series with 15 hours playing time. Sadly no extras or bonus material, but still a great buy.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 June 2024Just love this box set. The Detectives has to be one of the funniest sitcoms ever made. Jasper Carrott & Robert Powell work so well together. George Sewell deserves a special mention too as their long suffering boss. You can just tell that they really enjoyed making this show & had genuine affection for each other.

5.0 out of 5 stars British humour at its BEST
Jasper Carrott is an excellent comedian, up on the stand with Billy Connolly and other comedians of our days watching and listening to their ways to make us laugh. Laughter keeps us alive and looking for more from the past to make us smile, and this series is excellent. Sit down and be totally amused by Carrott and Powell and a good beer, Cheers
