Product description
Originally aired in 1969, The War Games marked the end of an era for the Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton), following him and his companions Zoe and Jamie as they land in a battlefield that appears to be a World War I military zone—but all is not as it seems.
They soon discover that soldiers from different historical periods have been abducted and are being manipulated in a cruel game. As they work to uncover the mystery behind the War Lord and his twisted experiments, the Doctor faces one of his most difficult challenges.
For the first time, these original episodes have been meticulously colourised and enhanced with updated visual effects edited into a new, 90-minute feature-length experience. With updated sound and a new score, this version of The War Games offers both fans and newcomers even more ways to watch the much-loved classic story.
In addition, the episode will also feature the Second Doctor's never-before-seen regeneration into the Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee), alongside recovered footage not seen since the original broadcast.
This release also includes the original ten episodes in black & white as they were first broadcast, plus all special features from the previous release.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 December 2024The War Games stands as one of the greatest stories from the entire run of Doctor Who but this version is poor.
The colourisation work is wonderful so it’s a shame they didn’t just apply it to the full ten episodes rather than chopping the story so badly.
The classic era stories build so well and have so much richness to their characters and settings. There are fantastic sub-plots and commentary on real world issues and even the bad ones (not that there were many) have some things to like.
This edition of the war games is made by nu-Who people who have turned it into their typical ADHD garbage where it jumps all over the place with no real sense made of anything
Watching the original, the creepiness of the hypnotic glasses was one of the best parts and that’s ALL missing!
Patrick Troughton is the greatest Doctor in my opinion and deserves much better. The animated stories are much more deserving of your money and time.
Should they colourise any more Troughton, let’s hope they leave the full story intact
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 December 2024I remember watching the original story over 50 years ago and have just watched the re-edited, colourised version for a totally new audience. Enhanced sound with tight editing that condenses 10 episodes to a 90 minute version. I loved it. It isn’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination. Some issues with the editing in my opinion and colourisation is patchy in places although the majority of the drama is alive with colour. It does feel there is still a lot of improvement that can be made to colourise B&W footage in years to come. But this is a minor quibble. Several nice touches such as the TARDIS travelling through Space in the opening scenes. The War Games Space/Time Travel Machines in flight. There is also the moment The War Chief is contentiously alluded to as The Master. It does make sense, as they are both renegades, but have chosen to follow different paths. Of course The War Chief could just as easily be any Timelord who turned bad.
In all, it is a joyously colourised Classic Doctor Who story, that moves along at a pace you can easily sit through in one sitting. The original B&W episodes are also available here to watch the full story.
I loved it.

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 December 2024Fantastic colourisation but edited to destruction. CGI looks a student project and the background sound drowns out the actors.
As with the daleks release why not clean the original episodes and put out as two discs, one coloured and one original b&w, both unedited? It would sell like hot cakes.
The 'modern audience' stuff is rubbish, the edit is hard to watch if you're 7, 17 or 77. Accept that it was made in a different age and put the effort into colouring all of it rather than a hyperactive cut down version.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 December 2024The war games (the b&w 4-hour proper version) is a classic but this version is sad.
Yes, the colorization is well done, but that's all this release has going for it, so much is cut out from the original. Now the story is rushed and in more than a few parts nonsensical
The added effects are interesting but unnecessary and the attempted nuwho additions were silly
I recommend buying the original b&w version on dvd.
Original 1969 version - 10/10
This colour version - 3/10 (being generous)
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 December 2024Not intended to replace the original, but a great alternative. The original 10 episode version was seriously padded out in the middle. This has been cut down to 90 mins…. Could really have done with being 120 mins as it’s very chopped at times. But on the whole it’s great.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 December 2024I love the classic series but who actually has 5 hours to watch the original. This is a great update made for a different time and a way for new people to access this story. It's not Intended to delete the original but for me this will be my default choice for this story! Very well done!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 December 2024The second colourised release and the improvement in technique is wonderful.
BUT
The story has been hacked to the point of near incoherence events happen and people take actions now seemingly without any motivation.
And the insertion of the War Lords 'Tellytubbies' Home Hill war base is intrusive as if viewers cannot remember where the characters are.
Likewise the constant sound is annoying and unnecessary not to mention anachronistic. It's as if the order was given to the editors not to allow a single second of silence.
But the BIG crime is the asinine retro fitting to make to make the War Chief - who clearly is not and never was - into the Master is nothing more than cretinous fan boys showing contempt for the original.
I image Terrance and Barry tutting somewhere not amused at this vandalism of their work.
