First broadcast in four weekly parts from 28 May to 18 June 1966. In this early story, the Doctor (William Hartnell) and his travelling companions Steven (Peter Purves) and Dodo (Jackie Lane), arrive on an unnamed planet where they encounter two distinct people - the Elders and the Savages.
They soon discover the Elders are the evil ones, draining the primitive Savages for their life source to remain young and powerful forever. This story marks the final appearance of Purves as Steven.
This will be a three-disc release including all four animated episodes in colour and black and white, plus brand-new bonus features.

With this release of William Hartnell's " The Savages," only four more incomplete ( missing ) telly adventures are left to have commercial visual presentations for SERIES 3 of the original DR WHO. The most depleted year in the BBC archives. As fans of the show, we are spoilt. Yeah - The Doc has a knack for laying golden eggs; but animations such as these are NOT a given. They need support to continue: SALES ! Not your favourite serial? BUY IT anyway. The makers might - in time - get round to something you prefer... Marco Polo for me!! The much desired " The Dalek's Master Plan, " would be A MASSIVE ( expensive ) undertaking : BUT with " The Savages " ( my preferred character designer of the two animation teams ), Martin Geraghty, has created visuals for both Hartnell and Peter Purve's STEVEN TAYLOR, for the first time. Excellent Taylor - features in three of SERIES 3's still missing tales...A lot of donkey work already now done: cutting down future animated costs. Surely ?? A mark of how clever Geraghty is, is his modern interpretation of JANO, and the other Elders...Darker lines and detailing, describing a figure, perhaps less appealing in 2025. These Paul Hembury produced re-creations, are also more satisfying, in that they tend NOT to deviate too much from the source material. Feel RIGHT. Although in my opinion, his " Underwater Menace" DID take too many liberties. SO, WHAT ABOUT THE STORY ITSELF? Originally conceived as The White Savages, like all good science fiction, it made points and parallels and raised awareness often under the radar. Rather than preach or seek to make questionable gags - like much of today's offerings. Transmitted in 1966, " THE SAVAGES," is a tale about colonial attitudes back in the day. And yep, it's PRETTY DARN GOOD folks...The BEST reason to buy something !
