For many years, I had read and heard a lot of anecdotal evidence suggesting that this was a worthwhile feed to use in and around the garden. However, I wanted to see the scientific evidence of its benefits before spending my hard-earned cash on a bottle of the product. My 'homework' revealed that indeed many studies at major universities around the world have yielded various findings about the positive effects of liquid seaweed as a fertilizer, including:
1. Seeds soaked in seaweed extract germinate more rapidly, have larger root mass, stronger plant growth and higher survival rates. Soaking plant roots in the extract also reduces transplant shock and speeds root growth.
2. When plants were fertilized with seaweed researchers found that: geraniums produced more flowers per plant; grapes were sweeter; gladiolus corms grew larger; and cucumber yields increased 40 percent (and the fruits suffered less often from softening and rotting).
3. Improved yields after seaweed treatments were measured in potatoes, sweet corn, peppers, tomatoes, apples, strawberries, okra and oranges.
4. The alginic acid in the seaweed is also a great soil conditioner, and numerous studies have shown that seaweed increases yields, plant health, disease and pest resistance.
5. Seaweed is full of trace elements which helps to increase mineral content in the soil and assists you in frowning more nutrient dense crops.
6. Plants treated become more frost tolerant.
In other words, there are many good reasons to use seaweed in the garden! My first experience of using this brand of concentrated organic seaweed feed was a couple of years ago, and I have to say I've been most impressed with the results I've been achieving. As well as using it on many shrubs and plants around my garden, I've used it on fruit trees and vegetable crops with equal success. Early in the year, I water it into my lawn as a preclude to further treatments throughout the year. I've also found it perks up my potted plants by providing them with a quick boost of organic nutrients. I agree with some reviewers who have suggested using it as a foliar spray which works much faster than through the soil - try this if you have problems with pests and diseases, and after a few applications, you should see an improvement in your plant's health. I have no hesitation in recommending this product from Doff, it does exactly as it says on the bottle, and represents very good value.
