After an issue with a socket and knowing a new washing machines and dryer were going into it after some building modifications I purchased this to do a quick test. I know it's a cheap one and you can pay a lot more for these testers. It works fine and tests for obvious faults and indicated that it wasn't the socket or ring main at fault. It turned out to be one of the other appliances that got plugged in there. So, happy with that I tested a lot of the other sockets in the house and discovered a faulty one. So that will shortly be replaced. It's a useful little tester for the average DIYer.

This means you know before plugging in a device to an AC outlet that it is safe to use. It is also very useful to be able to see the voltage of an AC outlet, particularly if you are running 220v European devices and are experiencing intermittent issues. The UK is 240V but with include the tolerance the voltage gap can be considerable.

It is well made and is one of the more important pieces of equipment in my mobile tool box.

So the description states this is a:-

Now I didn't have to waiting for the election to come and find what was wrong. Because I was able to find out our one extention lead was at fault and tripping my electric.

If we'd had one of these a couple of years ago, we could have diagnosed the cause of our circuit breaker regularly tripping, at all times of day and night which meant going out in the garage to reach the box and flip it back.

It turned out when the electricians came out, they used one of these and established several sockets were never wired correctly, including ones in the conservatory that had been ten fifteen years ago.

This is a great thing to have to give you confidence about your sockets, and of course, especially so if you've had a new socket fitted, or had one replaced, and especially if you've done it yourself. Also if your house is older, it's worth testing all the sockets as and when you can to be sure there's no problems with them.

A great gift for a DIY fan who may not bother with getting one since it'd be easy for such a thing to seem like a luxury that they surely don't need, if they know how to fit or repair a socket. But everyone can make a mistake, and everything that can be installed, can be installed incorrectly or break.

The backlit LED gives you the working voltage of the power at the plug between Live and Neutral, Neutral and Earth, and RCD value that can be tripped with the rest button on the front.
The main thing is the 3 red LED lights at the top. Taking note of the chart below the LCD, you can quickly see if there are any issues with the wiring and address as need be.

In use, you just have to plug it into a live socket and it'll immediately spring to action and show it's values. RCD test button trips immediately, so keep the fingers away from it. The shell is rugged and provides good grip to insert and remove it easily.

While you can get by without one, ideally you really should be testing after things like pulling back sockets when papering/painting etc and even more so if you're changing faceplates over or adding spurs/outside sockets to existing circuits.

Overall, a nice tester, definitely one for the odd jobs tool bag.

Rather than just have some small led lights only showing you issues, you get a very clear display giving you Live/Neutral voltage, Neutral-Ground voltages and RCD values

This is great for testing that plugs have been wired in correctly and to ensure plugs are not live.

There is also a RDC tester too, pressing this simulates a leakage and should trip the RCD, I happened to hit this while inserting the plug, and managed to trip that circuit so yes it works great !!

I have several of the older plug testers but this looks a lot nicer and is only marginally more expensive at £13.79 (There is currently a 10% voucher at the time of the review)
