Product description
Celebrated vocal group VOCES8 take listeners on a glorious journey through the musical landscape of Britain with their brand new album ‘Enchanted Isle’, released on Decca Classics. The recording features a broad range of music from John Tavener and Thomas Adès to Radiohead and Enya, interspersed with folk tunes, world premiere recordings and music from hit TV shows Game of Thrones and Harry’s Game.
Alongside timeless folk songs are modern hits, the new album includes Radiohead’s ‘Pyramid Song’ (from the band’s fifth studio album Amnesiac) which takes on a new dimension in this arrangement for voices, harp and strings. VOCES8 also cover ‘The Rains of Castamere’ from Game of Thrones – a piece which was first recorded for the HBO series by The National and Sigur Rós. There is also ‘I Was Born For This’ from the Grammy-nominated video game score Journey, composed by Austin Wintory, and the haunting theme from British TV drama Harry’s Game – originally written and performed by Irish band Clannad.
VOCES8 bring their distinctive vocals to folk tunes from around the British Isles – from Celtic classics ‘Danny Boy’ and ‘The Parting Glass’ to ‘Carrickfergus’, featuring the astonishing young Irish singer Sibéal (who sings in the traditional sean-nós style). The album also reaches as far afield as the abandoned Scottish island of St Kilda, with the recently-discovered tune ‘Soay’ – in a new arrangement by British composer Rebecca Dale, which includes a poignant cello solo. Other Scottish tunes to appear on the album are ‘My Luve is Like a Red Red Rose’ arranged by Latvian choral composer Ēriks Ešenvalds, and ‘Caledonia’ by Dougie MacLean, arranged by VOCES8’s own tenor Blake Morgan.
There are two world premiere recordings on the new album: VOCES8 commissioned young English composer Toby Hession to write a new a cappella choral work ‘She Walks in Beauty’; and there’s the debut recording of a new arrangement of ‘The Sun Never Says’ by American composer Dan Forrest – a stirring work for choir and solo cello. Fellow American choral writer Jake Runestad also features on the album with ‘Let My Love Be Heard’ – a setting of a text by English 19th century poet Alfred Noyes.
Completing the album are powerful choral pieces including ‘Agnus Dei’, Samuel Barber’s own arrangement of his Adagio for Strings, John Tavener’s ‘Song for Athene’, featuring excerpts from Shakespeare’s Hamlet alongside the traditional Orthodox liturgy, and ‘O Albion’ by Thomas Adès – the first ever arrangement of this movement from his string quartet, Arcadiana, set to text from William Blake’s 18th century poem ‘Visions of the Daughters of Albion’.
Together, this evocative collection of songs casts a contemporary eye on the landscape of rolling hills and green valleys, rugged mountainsides and hidden villages of the ‘Enchanted Isles’, each performed by VOCES8 in their unique, exquisite style.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 June 2021I came to Voces8 through their later album, After Silence. Enchanted Isle is a very different soundscape from that album, which is a mix of both classical, secular and modern choral music. Enchanted Isle is unashamedly 'niche' in that it takes on (for the most part) songs already familiar to most listeners; for example Theme from Harry's Game by Clannad is reimagined with wonderful effect. It is a very well-paced album with the opener 'Soay' lulling you into their calming world. 'Carrickfergus' is a joint project with Irish native singer, Sibeal and is gorgeous - Voces8 and she perfectly complementing one another. 'May It Be'is from Lord of the Rings and is simply stunning. I defy anyone to breathe whilst listening to it!! Andrea Haines has wonderful control over her soprano voice. Sje never screeches or leaves you wanting to turn down the volume. Her voice is just perfect for everything she takes on. The Barber needs to be heard through good headphones/earbuds. I listened to it and wanted to send them a fan letter; Barber would be so proud. The album has a few outliers (including the Barber), one of which, The Pyramid Song acts like an earworm; you'll keep hearing it for hours afterwards, perhaps against your wishes. My own personal favourite is 'Let My Love Be Heard'and I highly recommend you find it live in YouTube- you won't be disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 December 2023One of the great things about Voces8 is that you never know what they are going to come up with next - each new disc is totally unpredictable. I love this one as much as all the others in its own way and one cannot fail to listen open-mouthed at the gorgeous sounds the group produces. I'm not quite sure how the American Samuel Barber's "Adagio" got included in the disc when the theme is the British Isles, but I'm glad it did, it is a spellbinding performance.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 January 2024Just love the sounds this group make whether it's in English, Latin or any other language; a great selection of listening.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 February 2024I was utterly enthralled.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 September 2022The CD is so relaxing to listen to. The Voces8 are so clear and a pleasure to listen to. I would recommend all their music.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 December 2020one of the sopranos in this group of singers is quite magnificent, a reminder of how the human voice is a quite stunning instrument and like the iceberg principle there may well be a ladle full of god givenl talent there is also much application, hard work and care of that gift to bring it to this quality; there is much to appreciate here.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 July 2022This is a selection of traditional songs performed flawlessly by this leading British octet. If you like mouth music then this is for you
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 January 2019I have huge respect for the work which VOCES8 have done, and have very much enjoyed their previous releases. Unfortunately, I found this much-anticipated new disc to be disappointing. VOCES8 produce a sublime vocal sound, so it is a shame that this has been hidden behind some over-complex arrangements, additional instrumentation, and what comes across as 'new age' 'effects'. Don't get me wrong, this is a high quality performance, but it's not the VOCES8 we know and love. No choir should be afraid to hide behind the unique sound of its own voices. Let the voices speak for themselves.
