- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 December 2024So happy to have found this on ÍøÆغÚÁÏ. Amazing film and exceptional picture quality!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 October 2024Merlin is excellent in this legendary tale of King Arthur.
Replaced my old DVD copy with this BRD. Excellent.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 April 2017A classic film, which never fails to enthrall me. The beautiful visuals and stirring soundtrack make this film such a timelss gem, and one I never tire of.
As yet, I am awaiting delivery of this bluray edition, but hopefully the quality will be even better than the old standard DVD that I currently own.
There is no mention of extras, however, which is a missed opportunity, especially since there has been a recent documentary on the making on the film, Behind the Sword in the Stone, made in 2013, which is an excellent documentary which SHOULD be included.
The art cards are a bonus, being such a beautifully crafted production, even stills are like works of art, but without the documentary, this release cannot get the elusive 5 star review. As said, I have not yet recieved it, so it is entirely possible that the documentary is part of the package but ommitted from the description. If so, consider this a five star review. :)
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 September 2024Brilliant portrayal of the legend of King Arthur
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 May 2024This is an excellent film. This is a great retelling of the King Arthur story. With some great film stars - Helen Mirren, Cherie Lunghi, Nicol Williamson, Gabriel Burn, Liam Neeson - the list goes on. In my view this is the best Arthurian legend film going.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 October 2021Trouble is its edited Uther had a hinged door flap on his armour when doing it to whoever to get his tadger out we thought that was halerous in second form back in the mid 80s. What film can say the whole sound track is Wagner and with an all star cast the bloke from the film Stigmata sir Patrick Stewart and Liam Neeson and I think when young Martin Cloons ? anyway the quest continues Deus vault. And I'm sure Malory will approve but why did it take so long to be in my film collection and why has this film been on TV once literally since the early 90s and not every Xmas along with Condor man.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 November 2019At last I have managed to get a copy of John Boorman 'Excalibur' on blu-ray, even if it is a foreign copy. I do find that certain films that don't seem to be released in England you can get hold of from abroad. Still as long as you can get a soundtrack that is in English, who cares?
When I first saw Excalibur I thought what a brilliant film, but seeing it now I do think it could have had a few things done differently. The music used in the film plays well with the theme at the time, but I do think in some of the scenes it just seems to be a quick burst then dies quickly. Using Carl Orffs Carmina Burana is inspirational, especially when the knights ride out to their last battle. All in all a masterpiece, beautiful to look at (especially Cherie Lunghi), well scripted & well acted, even though Nicol Williamson playing Merlin was a bit over the top. Perhaps he was told to play it that way? Fantastic!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 June 2014Director John Boorman brings to the screen the Arthurian legend in this 1981 production which draws its material from the works of Sir Thomas Malory's "Le Morte d'Arthur" version of the story with the part of Merlin played by Scottish born Nicol Williamson who steals every scene he is in, he plays Merlin with great gusto and style, John Boorman creates a film that is both beautiful and frustrating to look at with scenes full of fog and filmed through filters and uses natural light so much so the modern film fan is going to be a bit bemused by the films look but it's look was the director intention but in saying that the transfer in the MPEG-4 AVC codec in full 1080p resolution on this 50GB region free disc leaves a lot to be desired with some scenes looking stunning and others looking very ordinary.
I wish I could report that the audio track was a redeeming feature but the DTS-HD Master audio 5.1 sounds flat erratic although the dialogue is clear and intelligible on the whole but sound effects such as horse hoof beats are reduced to weak and sluggish rumble, the special features are as follows the original trailer and a really dull commentary by director John Boorman.
There are also audio tracks in French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese and Czech in Dolby Digital Mono, there are also subtitles in the following: - English for the hard of hearing French, Spanish, Portuguese, Czech, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish, German and Italian for the hard of hearing.
The film has the running time has been restored to 2hours 20 minutes which is better than the US edited version of 119 minutes at the cinema.
With the current state of affairs with this release it is for die-hard fans of the film and if you can find it at the right price I would recommend for the moment stick to the UK DVD version...
My 3 star rating reflects the quality of the Blu-ray and not the film itself which is at least 4.5....

5.0 out of 5 stars Geen Nl ondertitels ondanks aangegeven in titel product

5.0 out of 5 stars Arthurian legend at its best and bloodiest!
This film seared itself into my brain when I sneakily watched it late night on Channel 4 as a kid. THAT scene...and that one...oh, and that one. Fantastic soundtrack to boot!

5.0 out of 5 stars Blast From the Past
This was a total nostalgia purchase, and one that I am over the moon making. Great re-telling of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, and a good lesson how a woman can just come along and tear it all down...obviously this is a tale told well before the term "Bros before Ho's" became a thing.
