Theres a lot of daft reviews on here, im not sure what people expect. the tone of the bell is fairly percussive, with just a hint of pure sine wave... it did bring back memories from my childhood as its exactly the construction used back in the 70s and the 80s, dont expect clearest tone, the bell itself is fairly thin walled. you can adjust the tone by turning the bell against its screw but all that gives you is a more or less muted tone without much in between. i wrote this review about the tone because that interested me an not many other reviews on here look at that. and yes, you do need a transformer and at least a little electrical know-how to get this working. if you dont know how to safely find a mains supply and wire it into an appropriately sized transformer you shouldnt go near this product and buy a battery powered one instead. still... i really feel nostalgic about this tone. much better than that 'ding dong' chime crap!

So our home is 15 years old, the doorbell stopped working two months ago. I got out a ladder and dismounted the old doorbell to take a look at the problem. It seemed to be an issue of wear, with 15 years of use. Therefore, the repair wasn't an option because the cost to repair would've been more than the doorbell was worth. So I searched online for a cost-effective alternative, this seemed to match the old bell perfectly. It's been installed for little over a month now, seems to be working perfectly. My only qualm is that the old Friedland-Honeywell bell didn't last longer, hopefully this will last at least another 15 years, preferably 20-25 year. The installation was simple, I have no electrical or DIY experience, it's just a matter of matching wires and doing a little research.

Inexpensive, small, unobtrusive, capable of working off either DC (batteries) or AC (transformer), and above all LOUD, there's little reason to look further than this unpretentious little item for a straightforward reliable doorbell. It is of course 'wired', not linked to the bell push by any kind of 21st century magic, and you will need both a bell push and a power source to make it work. In my case those ancillary items were already in place and it was just a matter of changing the bell itself, which had died of old age. I have no hesitation in recommending this item.

We needed a simple bell to replace an old two tone doorbell that had lost one tone. It "Bonged" but didn't "Bing" despite careful cleaning and lubricating as per the instructions inside. I did have to craft a piece of wood to mount the bell on simply to cover the hole in several layers of old wallpaper where the old chime box had been papered around! Otherwise it was a very simple job to fit and connect the existing wires from both front and back door bell push wires. It works perfectly from the existing 12v AC transformer hard wired into the circuit.
Open the attached video and turn up the volume to hear what it sounds like from outside our back door.
