before and after

Why use Garotta?

Garotta speeds up the natural process of composting whilst creating a better quality compost.

BIOLOGICAL ACCELERATOR: A combination of microbes (both bacteria and fungi) quickly breaks down your garden & vegetable waste.

MICROBIAL FEED: Gives the microbes a boost of immediately available nutrients. This microbe food speeds up the process of decomposition.

pH NEUTRALISER: Lime is added to maintain the right pH to keep the microbes happy.

NATURAL MINERALS: These help drainage, prevents waterlogging and along with turning the heap, allows more oxygen in the pile for quicker decomposition.

BUILDS PLANT IMMUNITY: Contains a source of Chitin which provides plant health benefits when using your new compost.

how to use garotta

How to use

Step 1:

Choose a site for your compost, ideally in a warm sheltered spot

Step 2:

Sprinkle 200-250g (about 2 trowels) over each 30cm layer of new material

Step 3:

Water the heap if the waste is dry or woody with approx. 4.5L (1 watering can)

Step 4:

Repeat steps 2 to 3 each time a layer is added. Your compost will be ready to use when dark, brown and crumbly. The time this takes varies from a few weeks to several months, dependent on air temperature and the materials you use.

what to compost

What to compost

The best compost is produced from a green (source of nitrogen) and brown (source of carbon) waste. Apply to your compost bin or heap in layers with a sprinkle of Garotta on each layer.

Brown (Carbon)

Cardboard, Dead leaves, Newspaper, Egg cartons, Untreated wood chips, Toilet rolls and Wood ash (not coal)

Green (Nitrogen)

Vegetable trimmings, Fresh green leaves & shrub prunings, Grass clippings, Tea bags, Coffee filters, Weeds (no seed heads) and Dead flowers.

top tips

Top Tips

Too Wet?

If your heap is too wet it could have too much water or nitrogen. Turn the pile regularly to aerate & keep the temperature under control. Add some brown materials like shredded cardboard, newspaper or small twigs to balance it out.

Too Dry?

The opposite is happening & you may have too much brown material. Add a layer of green together with a splash of water & a sprinkle of Garotta.

A Bit Smelly?

It's best not to add fresh food waste to the pile like meat, fish or dairy. Not only do they make the pile smell bad, but it can also invite unwanted pests to your garden.

Too Slow?

If the process is too slow you may find that your brown material is too large. Make sure you shred the sticks & tear the cardboard into smaller pieces to increase the available surface area for the microbes to get to work on.

Where to use?

Use the compost you make as a soil conditioner or a garden mulch to help replenish nutrients. Use all around the garden on beds & borders or veggie patches.
