Product description

Product Description

Epic romantic drama based on Margaret Mitchell's Pulitzer-winning novel set during the American Civil War. Southern belle Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) often uses men to get what she wants, but is unable to get the one man she truly desires, Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard). She soon meets her match in the roguish Captain Rhett Butler (Clark Gable) and in the war itself which destroys the genteel way of life she has always known. With determination she rebuilds her life from the shattered remains the Union Army leaves behind. Despite its sometimes troubled production (director George Cukor was replaced by Victor Fleming, with Sam Wood brought in when Fleming's health failed), the film won ten Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress.

ÍøÆغÚÁÏ.co.uk Review

Gone with the Wind is a sprawling mosaic of a picture, one of the best-loved and most successful in movie history, but also one of the most frustrating. Wonderfully epic in scope, the decline and fall of the antebellum South as seen through the eyes of feisty, independent and wilful heroine Scarlett O'Hara makes the first half of the picture an absolutely riveting spectacle. From the aristocratic old world of Tara to the horrors of Atlanta under siege, Gone with the Wind features any number of indelible scenes and images: the genteel girls taking an enforced siesta during the Twelve Oaks barbecue, a horrified Scarlett walking through the wounded, the flight from burning Atlanta, and Scarlett's moving pledge against a burnished sunset set to Max Steiner's glorious music score. But the second half shifts gear, the melodramatic quotient is upped yet further as tragedy piles upon tragedy, and despite its unwieldy length everything feels rushed. Add to that the central problem that the audience never really understands, why Scarlett could ever fall for weak-chinned Ashley in the first place, and the picture begins to unravel unsatisfactorily. Behind the scenes problems doubtless contributed, with directors coming and going, Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable apparently barely able to stand the sight of each other, and producer David O Selznick's endless rewrites and interference. Nonetheless, this 1939 box-office smash remains one of Hollywood's finest achievements, an irresistible spectacle chock-full of the finest stars in the filmic firmament striking sparks off one another. They really don't make 'em like this anymore.

On the DVD: No extra features on this DVD, which is a pity given the amount of material that must be available, but it has to be admitted this disc is worth the asking price simply to drink in the astonishing quality of the picture, sumptuously presented in its original 1.33:1 "Academy" ratio. The mono sound is vivid, too, showcasing Max Steiner's headily romantic score. --Mark Walker

The ultimate 20th Century movie - Magnificent, moving, unforgettable!

The ultimate 20th Century movie - Magnificent, moving, unforgettable!
I have seen this movie many times over the years, and never got tired of it. In my opinion it is the best movie ever made, best story, best actors, best directing, best score. A love story on the backdrop of the American Civil War and Reconstruction, high drama from the book of the same title by Margaret Mitchell. So timeless and technically brilliantthat it is hard to believe it was actually made 80 years ago!An unforgettable experience! Best seen on the big screen, of course, but I wanted to own my own quality copy.

Watching GWTW, for the first time, I felt I was watching pretty much all of Jane Austen (there's even a character called Darcy in it), Vanity Fair, and Wuthering Heights, all rolled into one epic, operatic melodrama. Bizarrely, it also reminded me, obliquely, of the Fifty Shades stories. Why, you ask: because of the super rich man whose wealth just seems to be there, conveniently ready to be exploited by the enterprising female protagonist. Otherwise GWTW runs in reverse, the marriage comes first and the rough sex part comes afterwards.

Don't worry, fragile reader. There's no nookie in GWTW, just plenty of war and destruction and death. Much easier on the eye, right?

GWTW has all of life's rich pageant in it, and it made me laugh several times, and just occasionally at the film as well as with it. The lead character of Becky Sharp (sorry, I mean Scarlett O'Hara) is one of literature's and cinema's great, great egoists. The American Civil War is to her an inconvenient nuisance, like an uninvited and underdressed gatecrasher. In the first half hour or so I was groaning: brother, I don't know if I can abide this capering coquette. Then Clark Gable's Rhett Butler appears, opens his mouth to speak, and the film ignites. From then on the next three hours and more are cake.

And thankfully the film has an intermission, an obvious halfway point, so you can stop, stretch your legs, take the dog for a walk, and come back to Tara later on.

Really, this film has the whole human comedy in it. I was fascinated by the way the characters, of which there are many, contrasted with each other, complemented one another, and represented different virtues and attitudes to life. There is so much delicious snobbery, so much prejudice and discrimination (not the kind you're thinking of), so much nobility and generosity, connivance and petty cruelty, and so much poignancy and loneliness. GWTW is full of people playing roles, just like its actors, trapped in the past as times change; and is it better to pull yourself up by the boot straps or sink solemnly and with dignity down into the oblivion, true to the old ways?

And I sure did laugh at how so many characters die, right on time, just when the plot needed them to, just as they became an obstacle to something else happening. As I said above, you can laugh at as well as with GWTW.

This is a sumptuous 1930s colour movie, one that swept the board at the Academy Awards, and it manages the grand sweep and the chamber scenes with near equal verve. Just bear in mind, it is a movie from the 1930s and a movie about the civil war of the 1860s, not at all a movie of the 21st century. So, don't expect, well you know, pin sharp digital images and CGI and all that.

Makes me want to read a short history of the civil war, and maybe a biography of Larry and Vivian.

I have seen the film on numerous occasions. It is a good film, but you can see how far films have progressed technically wise and how far we have come. Still a good film.

An enrapturing film of titanic significance, although it spans almost four hours I believe that all should watch, even if just for the charming accents and stunning fashions.

Good film but sound variable, needs cleaning up

What more can I say about what is one of the all time great movies? They don't make them like this anymore. A wonderful cast, great locations, enhanced by a great music score composed by Max Steiner. This version is the so-called Roadshow version, Overture, first part of the movie, Intermission, then second part of the movie with Exit Music being added onto the end to give it that "Cinematic" feel.

Picture quality and sound on this Blu-Ray disc is very good indeed. I do not know whether there is a version available on the new 4K format, but I cannot imagine picture quality being that much better. There are also a couple of good extras, one exploring the history of the "Old South" which is worth seeing.

I have tried so many times to watch this film until the very end! I’ve lost interest, fallen asleep, or just plain given up! Anyway, this time I finally managed it, I bought the Bluray version to help me concentrate for the journey!
Firstly, the Bluray is just fantastic quality and crystal clear – 10/10.
It’s a bit of a waste of time going over the plot isn’t it - after all these years! Just to say that Clark and Vivian were fantastic as the leads, and who couldn’t help but love that maid! Old Rhett, all tan, teeth & tash – but what a good looking guy – and rich as well girls! Well, Scarlett, you got what you deserved didn’t you! No sympathy from this end I’m afraid.
What a memorable scene that was when Rhett was leading the buggy through the fire and munitions, and that huge torched warehouse collapsed around them -utterly amazing cinematography for its day. That will always stay with me.
Can you believe that Gable did not win an AA for his performance, but Leigh did – even the maid did! So, he lost the war, his wife and his trophy. No wonder he turned a drink?
The only other thing I can say is just how much I enjoyed this film having finally stayed the course. Perhaps I found it easier now that I’m older – I think that helps? The film has now grossed some 3.5 billion, making it he most successful film ever.
