Product Description
?No-one, but no-one performs Messiah better every year than the choir Polyphony under the conductor Stephen Layton? (Evening Standard) Polyphony and Stephen Layton?s live Messiah at St John?s Smith Square has become one of the highlights of the musical season. The joyful sincerity and urgent brilliance of the performers has brought the familiar story to life again and again. Now this wonderful experience is available on disc, recorded in 2008 for a new release that will surely prove a strong competitor in a necessarily crowded market. Polyphony is joined by the Britten Sinfonia and a quartet of magnificent young soloists ? all variously acclaimed as the premier Handel singers of the new generation.
Review
Building a Library: Handel Messiah Best Recording Stephen layton's musicians bring an unparalled freshness to this familiar work, combining power with a delicacy faithful to Handel's Baroque sensibility. This Messiah not only captures the heart, but ravishes the ear. --BBC Music magazine, Christmas 2013

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 December 2023Having read a number of reviews of ¡®Messiah¡¯ CDs I settled for this one as it came out consistently at the top. I wasn¡¯t disappointed as it is a crisp recording and the choice of soloists suited my ear very well. My only slightly negative comment ( and I am not a musician so it is entirely subjective) is that my two favourite pieces sprang surprises, the ¡®Hallelujah¡¯ is rather fast and there is an alarming trill in the middle of ¡®I know that my redeemer livery¡¯. I¡¯m sure I will get used to both and the remaining pieces were superb.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 April 2019Having lived in Leipzig and visited Handel's birthplace in nearby Halle, I have fallen for this musical genius the more I got to know about him. The Messiah is his piece for Christmas and what a piece. I had a CD which was bought a number of years ago which did not do justice to this exceptional work. I searched all the review sites and saw this one was consistently rated as the best and it is. The recording is clear and the vocals are perfect. This CD finally does justice to a powerful piece of baroque music, which if played via a good amp and speakers makes you feel as if you are in the room with the orchestra. Stunning.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 August 2015One of the best Messiah recordings. Beautiful and bright performance. Young singers with light, bright, and warm lyrical voices. Julia Doyle, Iestyn Davies, and Allan Clayton sing with a good balance between technical virtuosity and sincere expression. Bass Andrew Foster-Williams has both authority and power. The chorus is excellent and the polyphony between the sopranos and tenors is particularly beautiful. Church acoustics are vibrant, bright and well articulated. A Messiah performance for repeated listening. Recommended along with many others, including: Christie, Perlman, Susuki, Davis, Higginbottom, Hogwood, Parrot, Gardiner, Hickox.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 January 2014Such a stylish performance, superbly executed, and with its small forces very fashionable these days. But...do the musicians really connect with the words? Somehow the whole lacks conviction: the surface is glittering, but what of the depth?
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 January 2014i bought this version of the messiah because the bbc music magazine for December judged it as the best version available,i have three versions two on cd and one on vynil.and having heard it only a couple of times would not argue with the review.it is a warm and clear sounding performance from start to finish, and it seems performed with great emotion, I am so pleased to have it .

4.0 out of 5 stars Nicely done
This isn't my favourite Messiah. However, you would be hard pressed to find a more well-rounded recording of it. The best thing about it is that the choir, Polyphony, accent their vowels perfectly and never leave a consonant behind. The words shine through beautifully.
I'm not always convinced by the alternation between the harpsichord and organ, nor by countertenors (in general); countertenor Iestyn Davies is excellent, a living legend probably.

5.0 out of 5 stars Belongs in Every Messiah Lover's Collection
This wonderful performance of Handel's Messiah is an easy choice for nearly Messiah aficionado. It is difficult not to simply repeat what the previous reviewers have already said, but this is an exceptionally clear and "forthright" performance that makes the most of a wonderful choir and orchestra combination to arrive at a world-class production. Yes, I would rate this performance among the standard "great" recordings which we have had for years. The recording sonics are excellent, the choice of soloists superb, and the choir and orchestra fully integrated into a tight, bright, and sparkling rendition. After so many previous recordings (which nevertheless remain among my favorites) it is like hearing The Messiah anew, in a somewhat different light, yet without compromising a true affinity to the score.
The recording was made in 2008 at St John's in London, and was selected as a "Classic FM Magazine Editor's Choice." The discs themselves were pressed in France by Hyperion.
Even after wallowing in many, many different recordings of The Messiah over the years, I say run, don't walk, to get a copy of of this while they are still available. A huge five stars.
