Product description

The Black Crowes are leaving the bullshit in the past. 15 years after their last album of original music, the Robinson Brothers present 'Happiness Bastards'- their 10th studio album. Some may say the project has been several tumultuous years in the making, but we argue it's arriving at just the right time. Call it brotherly love or music destiny that brought them back together, the highly anticipated record consecrating the reunion of this legendary band just may be the thing that saves rock & roll. In a time where the art form is buried beneath the corporate sheen of its successors, The Black Crowes are biting back with the angst of words left unsaid penned on paper and electrified by guitar strings, revealing stripped, bare-boned rock & roll. No gloss, no glitter, just rhythm and blues at it's very best - gritty, loud, and in your face.

Since The Black Crowes reunited in 2019, they've made a triumphant return to form with over 150 shows spanning 20 countries worldwide, celebrating the 30th anniversary of
'Shake Your Money Maker', the album that put them on the map. Upon their return from the road, they knew they needed something new to show for their lost time. The Robinson Brothers and longtime bassist Sven Pipien headed to the studio with producer Jay Joyce in early 2023 and the experiences of years past transcribed themself through the music as the band found their way back to their roots. And it's finally here -'Happiness Bastards' is out March 15, 2024.

Classic Rock Magazine's album of the year - it is in my top five. Their best. Some good guitar-based songs on there.

The Black Crowes were a band very much influenced by seventies rock bands such as Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones and perhaps most of all The Faces who's always tottered on the edge of chaos without ever falling of that edge. Their first 2 albums Shake Your Money Maker and The Southern Harmony And Musical Companion cemented this sound.
But the heart of the band were the brothers Rich and Chris Robinson this was both a strength and a weakness as with other sibling lead bands notably Oasis and The Kinks the brothers fell out and went their separate ways. Recently there has been a reproachment and this album Happiness Bastards is the result it is a return to their core classic rock roots with elements of the Stones, Zeppelin and of course The Faces all in evidence the second track Rats And Clowns has an almost punk like feel, but the opening track Bedside Manners really sets the albums stall out with its glorious Stones/Faces feel. So a return to the glories of Shake Your Money Maker almost 35 years later!!!

“Happiness…” is the hardest & heaviest sounding Black Crowes album to date (their last, “After the Frost” had a Roots/Americana style to it) & with most of the album recorded in under three weeks, it gives the songs a real urgency.
It’s a shame there couldn’t have been a couple of more experimental songs on the album, like Chris Robinson recorded with Brotherhood.
Still “Happiness..” is a enjoyable organic Bluesy Rock affair & hopefully the brother’s Robinson can remain cordial with each other so they can create more music together in the future.

Was 2009 that long ago? Hard to believe it has been that long since the Crowes album but it has. For now the brothers are on the same page, hopefully back for good, and they have a really good one in the can. It’s more a straight ahead rock n roll album, and it gets better with every listen, I’d definitely put it ahead of other latter day efforts like By Your Side and Lions. I can’t wait for the tour to hit the U.K, they are still the best live band around, that actually plays live. There is no Gorman or Marc Ford but the new guys play well and you have to bring it if you’re in the black Crowes. For me side 1 slightly stronger than side 2, but pretty good from start to end, well done boys.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible - Classic Crowes with the benefit of 40 years of experience.
Reviewed in the United States on 27 March 2024
Don't say this lightly, I suspect many people will consider this their "best" album.
I don't necessarily judge music in this manner myself. What I found with Happiness Bastards was a class Crowes feeling with the benefit of 40 years of experience. Hooks reminiscent of SYMM, That on the edge dirty feeling of BYS, especially the guitar tones. Very right to the cliffs edge of falling into chaos, but always stays clean and with a high level of musicianship. Quite enjoy that modern 90s+ style of country blues / rock with that incredibly well played dirty feeling and adding in the gospel / Pentecostal feeling of TSHAMC backing vocals... When the single release / Pre-Album release for "Waiting and Wanting" came out, you could feel the direction of tone and drive of what this album *could* be leading to, and they hit that mark beyond admirably and convincingly. Some of the things in a post Cher "Believe" and the rise of auto-tune as well as hip-hop centering more on samples / computer generated instruments that has had me drifting away from "new" artists is a lack of actual use of instruments. While I am not claiming 1 is more talented then the other in regards to computer generated instruments vs actual, it's akin to practical effects vs CGI - both take a level of talent to become a master of a craft - for me having a computer play some thing perfectly every time? Isn't "for me". This goes for any genre - but I find in a post Tupac world and the rise of Jay-Z style hip hop it just happens to be the most obvious distinction to be made. I'll stick to pre Jay Z when they had musicians laying the tracks and tracks they sampled did have actual musicians on them - what I like about people mastering an instrument is that no one really ever masters an instrument. And there is always an ability to be better, especially live, there is always the ability to deviate from the norm. This Crowes album exemplifies what I miss most about the music of my youth and my parents you and my grandparents youth and my great grandparents youth... Crowes have always been top notch musicians, but circling back to where I started - with 40 years on from them forming, the inherent beauty of this release is palpable. I hope they get some newer fans off this release and some kids who may hear the Crowes for the 1st time go back and experience their whole catalog as especially over time - as to be expected - alot of bands do get known for 1 or 2 songs, especially the Crowes being pigeon holed into "the 'She talks to angels' band" does their output a disservice. I hope we see more and it's not another what? 15 years? Before another album of original material. That being said - if it is? As Happiness Bastards definitely proves; it will be worth the wait.
