Product description

From acclaimed director Alexander Payne, The Holdovers follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during the holiday break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually, he forms an unlikely bond with one of them - a damaged, brainy troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa) - and with the school's head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam (Da'Vine Joy Randolph).

We bought this DVD mainly based on the generally good reviews of Sideways, another Paul Giamatti film, which we also bought at the same time. Frankly, the latter film is tedious in the extreme, and we binned it after scarcely a half hour, whilst The Holdovers actually has a good story line and fair production values, and it kept us entertained until the end. Not a masterpiece by any means but certainly worth watching.

This is a very good film worthy of awards in my opinion. The performances are superb and the sets and script are excellent. They DO make em like they used to!

A wonderful film. From the same Director as the classic Sideways, and once again featuring the always excellent Paul Giamatti. A heart warming, life affirming black comedy, with a great sense of time. Too many new films of the last few years have left me a little cold (Oppenheimer for one), but this seems like a return to proper old fashioned story telling and film making. And that’s a good thing.

A witty, sad, funny, hopeful movie - added to my collection of reliable standbys - especially for wet Sunday afternoons!

My type of film, a snowy wintry 1970’s set comedy drama in New England….perfect!

At an all male boarding school, classics professor Hunham (Paul Giamatti) is left to look after the Christmas ‘holdovers’ (students not leaving campus for the holidays), alongside cafeteria manager Mary (an Oscar winning Da’Vine Joy Randolph). Over the holidays Hunham, Mary and one particular student Angus (newcomer Dominic Sessa) forge a friendship with each other.

Beautifully shot, with a real period feel, a gentle but involving storyline and strong performances from its central trio it’s nothing flashy, just quietly very enjoyable and entertaining.

Extras are slight, of the largely one watch kind but have their little moments. A featurette on lead actor Paul Giamatti, one on director Alexander Payne, a slightly extended/alternate ending and a handful of deleted scenes (with explanatory notes) that runs just over 25 minutes or so.

This is a slow burn not as it seems film. Paul Giamatti is a brilliant actor in my opinion, its a gentle and quiet depiction of Love and respect with a little vinegar on the side. I enjoyed this very much indeed. The cast were exceptional.
