Product Description

Hubs are simple to snap together joints that make geodesic domes easy, quick and fun to build.

Now anyone can build a geodesic dome!

Domes are brilliant structures but hard to build. The kit makes it possible for anyone to build their own dome-based something.

Works with any wood

The ball connectors simply screw onto the ends of the sticks using a standard PZ2 bit. Once they're on you're ready to build.

Easy to snap together

The ball connectors snap into the hubs in a specific alignment and orientation. Out of that alignment they stay in the sockets.

Wide angles of movement

Allows you to build from the inside to the outside, connecting each layer at a time. The dome grows up out of the ground!

Lots of possibilities - what would you build?

A moonbase for the kids, a dome home for your dog, a nature hide, festival tent, chicken run, planetarium, pond cover, green house, fruit cage, aviary, observatory? We love seeing what people make.

Scaleable and adaptable – what could you create?

By cutting sticks to different lengths you can create domes of different sizes and because the joints aren't fixed you can alter and adapt the base structure after creating your dome. Fancy making the bottom legs longer? or creating an igloo-like entrance way? – you can, just as long as it's still structurally sound.

Words and pictures

Describe your products in 3 words.

Practical. Fun. Educational.

How did you come up with the idea for this product?

Chris has always liked geodesic domes, and about 5 years ago he made a geodesic dome on his allotment out of some old chestnut fence pales. It looked great but took a long (long!) time and involved copious amounts of glue and a big jig. We thought it would be a fun project to make that process simpler as a bit of test for a recently acquired 3d printer. As we got further along it evolved from a hobby into a fully-fledged product design project, and here we are!

What makes your product special?

It makes the hard bit (the angles and joints) of a geodesic dome, simple. You just need to cut two lengths of stick and screw on the ball connectors and you’re ready to go. You’ll have a durable dome built in 20 minutes or so. You can also change the scale by cutting the sticks to different lengths, which is handy, and work with all kinds of wood from broom handles and fence pales to foraged branches and old chair legs. A lot of domes are metal structures so being able to make them in wood is really nice and a bit more complementary to natural spaces. Ultimately the kit is an enabler for people to make their own dome-based something, whatever that may be!

What has been the best part of your experience?

There have been lots of little highlights – from meeting the God Daughter of Buckminster Fuller the first time we put up our prototype dome at a wood fair, to getting a 92 year old backer on Kickstarter who had worked on domes in the 70s. But overall I think it’s learning new things and meeting new people, though getting positive feedback and seeing pictures of cool hubs' domes popping up around the world is quite hard to beat.
