- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 November 2020For those of us bemoaning the cancellation of the UK tour due to the viral misery that was COVID 19, the only antidote to our socially distanced, locked down existence, was the prospect of a stripped back performance from the mad preacher come haunting balladeer that is Nick Cave. A man ( albeit a mightily talented one), a piano and an empty room, save for the invisible cameraman capturing this utterly captivating performance for the live stream audience.
It veers between haunting self discovery, sadness, unrequited / requited love, tragedy and loss. Cave is front and centre, heart on sleeve, pouring every ounce of passion he has in to this solo performance and much like the man himself, there is not an gram of fat or wasted effort. This is a thing of beauty, a challenge to himself accepted and met. It is restrained and powerful all at once and as mesmerising as an audio recording, as it was a televised performance.
Fans of Mr Cave will not be disappointed, but any lover of intelligent, emotional music will find much to admire here. Cave holds a mirror up to those times in all our lives when, in all honesty, we would prefer to look away. But he shows us the beauty in redemptive love, the importance of facing loss and occasionally a flash of brimstone from the past. The Bard of Brighton has rarely sung or played better and the lone piano accompaniment only serves to highlight the brilliance of the lyrics that still flow from his pen.
No resting on his laurels and pumping out a “best of” album here, to fill out the boredom of these socially isolated days. This is daring and wonderful and a testament to the power of the music produced by Nick and his fellow Bad Seeds.
So put the lights on low, pour out a glass of something suitable and turn up the speakers just slightly louder than you might think is strictly necessary and let the music wash over you. This is an excellent slice of Cave.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 November 2020Those who have listened to or read Nick Cave's lecture “The Secret Life of the Love Song” will be familiar with saudade. A Portuguese word which translates as an inexplicable longing or an unnamed and enigmatic yearning of the soul. This album has saudade in abundance. It is, without any shadow of doubt a masterpiece. Nick Cave has always said that a good song can be played in many ways, solo, with a full band or orchestra. He proves the point here by stripping down his songs and letting us hear them in an intimate way. Just him and a piano in a huge empty space. Cave is a man who never ceases to amaze with his creativity. We never know what is round the corner with him. The idea of him performing his songs alone at Alexandra Palace was inspired and showed that despite all the restrictions COVID has placed on us all it will not stifle creativity. Art will always prevail and Nick Cave shows us that with this amazing two disc set. His fans will know all the songs but I have no doubt they will find new meaning in them all. Girl in Amber, Euthanasia, Jubilee Street, Galleon Ship all deserve special mention but believe me, there is not a weak link in this set. His voice has never been better. My own favourite is The Mercy Seat. Although I love the full band version my favourite has always been the acoustic version on B Sides & Rarities so this recording ticks all the boxes for me. I cannot recommend this set highly enough. Even if you only have a passing interest in Nick Cave's music I am sure you will derive a lot of pleasure from listening to it. Turn the light down, pour a glass of wine and immerse yourself in this magnificent music.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 February 2021I love Nick Cave. Usually his music production and his band make the songs quite unique providing the with their own atmosphere which complements his song writing perfectly. However on this album Cave is striped down to his vocals and a piano. After listening to album and other live versions the songs i found it this makes a refreshing change. His vocals can out a lump in my throat and raise the hair on the back of my neck. I have always found his strongest point was his song writing and even though I said before his band add alot atmosphere whilst listening to this album I found it easier to focus on the lyrics which gave me a new appreciation for some of his song I have enjoyed for years. Often I find when bands do acoustic or stripped live shows it can feel like a gimmick but that is definitely not the case here. Nick Cave seems to get better as a performer as time goes on. One of the best live albums I have listened to. This album gave a long time fan alot of appreciation for songs I have heard hundreds of times. It covers a large part of his career with the bad seeds and grinder man. Even though it 2 discs I would have like to hear alot more of his songs done this way.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 October 2022A beautiful recording mixed and mastered to perfection. The vibe/ambience is ethereal. I've always found Cave to be an acquired taste and struggle with his idiosyncratic delivery at times. In this setting, alone with piano in such a cavernous space it all seems to work. There is a sense of doom and foreboding about it all which kind of chimes with the period when it was recorded- during the height of the Covid pandemic. I really need to be in a particular head space before I can attempt to listen to this 2 disc set.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 November 2023Soulful, moving and melodic. Quirky lyrics and stripped-down emotional melody. A classic. I only wish the concert was available as a DVD too.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 February 2021I'm not a long standing Nick Cave fan, I've enjoyed the occasional song over the years but I did feel very captivated by the Ghosteen album and have returned to it again and again, slowly being drawn in further. This collection of stripped back accoustic songs, recorded during lockdown, was recommended by a friend and they are amazing. The vinyl album needs to be listened to, not played in the background, it is raw and emotional and will leave you wanting more...

5.0 out of 5 stars GENIUS! It's deep, soothing, relaxing, thoughtful, and brooding.
Nick Cave is one of our eras true creative geniuses. Don't believe me, look at his output, listen to his music, read his lyrics, and read his novels. He was bored during the Covid-19 lockdowns, as everyone was, so the muse within him decided to re-record his songs but with only a piano and his voice. The paired down version of his songs strangely do not make the listener feel that anything is missing (meaning his band the Bad Seeds) but oddly make the lyrics come even more alive and penetrate your very soul. (If Nick Cave reads this please make a gospel album of your songs like Bob Dylan's Saved or Slow Train Coming. You'd do a remarkable job; and please rebook your Denver concert that was cancelled during the lockdowns). Godspeed.
