Having had a disaster using a commercially available record/vinyl cleaning solution I felt it was time to try making my own cleaning fluid. There are many recipes available on the web. I wanted a simple gentle fluid that was easy to mix and cost effective. The base of the solution is distilled water, sometimes Isopropyl alcohol and nearly always a wetting agent. Without a wetting agent it is unlikely that the solution will get deep down into the tiny record grooves. A variety of products are recommended on the web but I felt that using one suitable for delicate film was probably the best.
Ilford's "Simplicity" product was a good starting point, cheap, well packaged and easy to dispense.
I found the product very easy to use but was most impressed by its' wetting capability, no smears or dry "bubbles" of dry areas on the record surface. However what concerned me most was the need for a product that reduced static on the vinyl surface. I am most impressed with how this product has dealt with reducing, indeed removing static from my records.
This wetting agent does not "foam" and works well in my Degritter ultrasonic record cleaning machine. It worked equally well in my manual Knosti RCM.
Having very satisfactorily tested the Simplicity product I have now purchased the 1 litre bottle. it is worth noting that a little goes a long way but I have a lot of records to clean.
