Made of galvanised steel, this lightweight and portable unit comes with a lid, handles, and three legs for easy movement. Suitable for leaves, twigs, branches, paper, cardboard and grass.

The incinerator has a diameter of 27cm and a depth of 47cm.

A useful little incinerator.

This is a small incinerator - exactly as needed as I only have a small space to safely use it. This was bought to dispose of paperwork and I would not use this from more dense materials. The ventilation holes and flue (chimney) ensure that this little incinerator works well. The three feet are easily attached with small spanner (not supplied) and the lid is a snug fit yet easy to lift on and off (though be warned as below).
It is worth knowing - With the lid in place the fire is ferocious for short periods. Be aware that the flame rises to up to half a metre from top of flue. After a smokey start, these high temperatures then burn paper cleanly. Do not use without leather gardening gloves or gauntlets as, when lifting the lid between burns, the lid was so hot that it singed the finger tips of the gloves. Leave to cool fully (over night) before disposing of ash or putting away for storage. I would ensure that this incinerator be kept under cover since I imagine it will be susceptible to rust if kept outside. What it’s life-span will be I have yet to discover!

Cost effective alternative to electric paper shredder

Very easy to assemble. Purchased to replace an electric paper shredder, did the job effectively and in a much shorter space of time (without the irritating noise!). No shredded documents to put in the recycling bin, and a residual quantity of ash to put on the garden. As long as you don't overload it or put items with high moisture content inside, you wont get unwanted smoke. The incinerator takes up very little space in an outside shed.

If you're looking at this to because you can't stomach buying yet another shredder, and you're only going to burn a small amount per week/month, then by all means go for this size.
If you're looking at this for the above reason, and act as a little garden light/heater for evening parties, also go for this size.

If on the other hand you've had to save up paper because you couldn't stomach buying another shredder and hadn't even thought about a 'burn bin' until you seen it, then pick a bigger burn bin or you could be at it for a while.

Make sure to buy fire resistent gloves at the same time as this if you haven't already got them. Another good reason to get fire resistent gloves, is when you're adding more paper to it when it's lit, unless you have the gloves, you'll have to settle for inserting paper through the holes on the side and that's going to take a lot longer. Don't try to add bits of paper through the hole in the lid, since the heat will be so intense the paper will catch light and also the power of the heat will blow the paper up into the air a fair enough bit which might then land on something and cause an uncontrollable fire.

As to the burn bin itself:
It's made as well as you could expect for the price, it's not thick or even solid steel and it will dent if you boot it, but it's sound enough for the job it has been adapted for.
You can easily burn wood in this, however, don't go stacking it up with wood as it isn't meant to sustain that sort of heat, and could eventually burn through and split, or fail in some other way. Although, i think you could get away with it the first time you use it.

When i first got it going, i loosely balled up paper for the bottom layer, then stacked torn paper on top, and it went up nicely. It got so hot i heard a pop come from it, and i assumed a rivot had split or something, but i can't see any damage like that so I've no idea what happened.

Flames will shoot out the hole in the lid when you pack it with papers and some sticks and twigs, so prepare for that and keep this well away from other things that might catch fire, and beware flying embers, even if you leave the lid on!

The nice shine will come off it due to the the high temp, but who cares about that?! I just mention it in case anyone complains it's no longer shiny, like somehow in their mind it would mean the product would no longer be fit for purpose.

Lastly, be a good neighbour and be mindful if they have their washing out to dry. If they do, then save burning your papers for another time.

Oh, one last thing, I have a steel tea pot that sits nice over the hole on the lid, (I suppose most will) and i brewed some tea from burning my old papers while pottering away in my garden. So if you have a steel tea pot, then it's nice way of saving a fraction of money on your electricity bill once in a while!

Absolutely perfect little bin as an alternative to a shredder. I normally use an electric shredder to dispose of old papers but I'd accumulated too many papers and needed a quicker method of dealing with them. While this works really well there is a temptation to burn a larger quantity of papers all at once because of it's size. I would therefore like to recommend to the makers of this product that an even smaller version would be an extremely useful addition to their portfolio. To those who are not used to using an incinerator, only burn a few papers at a time otherwise you'll have a raging fire and suffocating amounts of smoke. That being said, if you 'get to know' your incinerator you'll love it like I do!
