So few box sets of this pricetag are actually *worth* the money. Most of the time, it's some tracks you may well already own on vinyl or CD, and a couple of bonus discs full of content that, whilst interesting, will probably only get a listen once or twice. Then the box set will languish on your bookshelf/record shelf and get little play in the future. This, though, I'm so, so happy to say is absolutely not like that. You can really tell Bo Burnham himself - as well as other designers working on the INSIDE box set - really wanted to make something that felt truly special, and worth it for the fans. I appreciate that.
I bought the hmv exclusive RGB 'splatter' vinyl, but the only difference between that and this standard, black vinyl box set is the vinyl colour. That's it. You still get a lot for your money, and it's an insanely inventive type of box set.
Each record is essentially double-housed, which feels opulent, before then being inside red, green and blue tinted sleeves. Mixing and matching which sleeve goes with which record makes all sorts of hidden pictures appear, which is something I haven't seen before. And it works really well! They're high quality, too - they're not incredibly cheap plastic.
But you also get a truly beautiful booklet (itself housed in a clear plastic film) full of lyrics - for both the tracks on the finished special and all the outtakes - that fits the same quirky, inventive aesthetic of the box set.
There's a high quality art card, which would look great framed and on the wall, as well as some window clings - they're the only part of the box set that feel a bit silly, but I'd still say the box set is worth the money without them. So just consider the clings as somewhat of a bonus.
And that's not to say anything at all about the songs themselves. INSIDE works so well as special because its content is not only funny and bitterly relatable, but also *incredibly* catchy, throwing pop hit after infectious synth number out at you. And truthfully, all the tracks on the outtakes, too, are worthy of having a place on your record shelf. '1985', 'Five Years' and 'Biden' are endlessly catchy, so it's nice to have a chance to finally own them on wax.
All in all, for the price, I'm utterly blown away at the quality, time and care put into this box set. It's only right given just how genius the special itself was, and still proves to be. If you're a big fan of Bo (and vinyl) and are on the fence about this box set, buy it. Buy it, buy it, buy it. It's worth every penny and more.
