Product Description
An ideal Christmas CD for the festive season
غ.co.uk
The John Rutter Christmas Album brings together most of the composer's Christmas songs and carols as well as several of his festive choral arrangements, including a rousing "Joy to the World" and the energetic "I saw three ships". Most of the 23 tracks have been taken from extant discs on Rutter's Collegium label although two, "Dormi, Jesu" and "Sans Day carol", were recorded especially for this release.
Rutter's first two published compositions, written while he was still a teenager, were Christmas pieces for choir, namely the glorious "Nativity Carol" and the infectious "Shepherd's Pipe Carol". Although very different in character, these two carols (for which Rutter also wrote the test) display the composer's sense of joy and wonder at the Christmas story. More than 30 years later, those sentiments are still there in pieces such as the melting "Dormi, Jesu", commissioned by King's College, Cambridge for the 1999 Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols.
Under the direction of the composer, the youthful voices of the Cambridge Singers are on sparkling form, as are the City of London Sinfonia and vocal soloists Gerald Finley and Stephen Varcoe. This album deserves to be played over and over--and not just at Christmas. --Rebecca Agnew
Review
offers nearly 80 minutes of his delightful carols drawn from earlier recordings, and if you don't already have a Rutter CD this one will do nicely. --Mail on Sunday
John Rutter is world famous for The Shepherd's Pipe Carol and Love Came Down at Christmas and he is beloved by amateur choirs the world over for his simple melodies, easy-listening harmonies and light syncopations. It's all amply represented on this disc...It's all impeccably performed by the excellent Cambridge Singers and fans of John Rutter won't be disappointed. --Classic FM Magazine

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 January 2024Tuneful arrangements of old favourites and some excellent new carols, all expertly performed.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 December 2015A beautiful; way to start the Christmas festival. John Rutter's music is so beautiful, and his settings of the Carols (when not his own works) are just so wonderfully structured and sound so right. It's a wonder he has not received a knighthood, but then he doesn't write squeaky gate music so he will not be in vogue with the 'cognoscenti'! But to me his works sound wonderful and make me think of Christmases a long time ago, when there was the magic of presents, and Santa Claus and the Midnight mass with mince pies and a drop of port to warm us before going to bed. All that is now gone, but there is still the Midnight Mass (on TV) and maybe a drop of port before bed, but there are still the carols to be heard.... And time for Reverie. Thank you John Rutter, your music is beyond wonderful - it brings inner peace and tranquillity and happiness to the years end.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 February 2021A wonderful celebration of the Christmas Story - beautifully sung by the Cambridge Singers and played by the London Sinfonia. All the music here a great joy to listen - some have become favourites - "There is a Flower" specially lovely; and the delightful "Donkey Carol" fairly trotting along in time with the little donkey. Thank you John Rutter - we played it so often over Christmas, and at other times too.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 January 2010Because my extensive CD collection was sadly bereft of any Christmas music I decided to rectify that situation, and this year I purchased the following Christmas CDs:
i) A Classic Christmas
ii) The John Rutter Christmas Album
iii) N?el - Christmas at Kings
iv) Legends Christmas Collection
If I were to rank this CD amongst those four, I would put it in third place with 'N?el' being the clear winner.
There is nothing wrong with this CD per se. The renditions are very good and the recording quality, as one would expect of a modern disc, is superb. The only detraction (if there is one), is the content. That is to say, if you are looking for an album of carols you can sing (or hum) along to whilst you prepare your Christmas feast, then you should look elsewhere.
As the title does say, this is JOHN RUTTER'S Christmas Album, i.e. it contains mostly HIS original compositions, recordings and renditions. With the exception of tracks in the 'Christmas Joy' section and 'Epilogue' most of these works will be largely unknown to 99.9% of the population - that however is not necessarily a bad thing, if it is only aural pleasure one is in pursuit of.
One aspect of this CD I did appreciate was the structure of the CD. That is, the six sections into which the progression is clearly and logically arranged.
Overall, a good CD, well recorded and well structured, but not one for your dining-room festive sing-along.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 January 2014In fact, this would be an excellent disc for any time of year, as it invokes one very special season so vividly. The performances are all one could wish for (as a retired choir member I can well remember the groans when a new piece by John Rutter was announced; his music is not easy to sing, despite being so melodic (oh those key changes!)) The music may be too sweet for ears used to rougher sounds, but it is so well made (in the symphonic world, the symphonies of George Lloyd spring to mind) - composed in a musical world full of cacophony this is music which the Victorians would have enjoyed, although the harmonies would have raised an eyebrow or two in that earlier age. The production is excellent, and, as an introduction to the music of John Rutter, this is an excellent disc.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 December 2013I bought this for someone as a Christmas present but غ very kindly gave me the MP3 version and I haven't stopped playing it during the run up to Christmas. I love John Rutter's work anyway and already knew one or two of the songs, but the majority of them were new to me. I have to say that the album really grows on you. I found myself thinking about the songs when I wasn't playing the album, so I'd have to go and put it on to find out which song I had on my mind. If you like a good choir, I would heartily recommend this album, which you will be playing for many Christmasses to come.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 January 2021I absolutely love this. Choirs singing carols are what makes Christmas for me and this soon became my 2nd favourite go to CD for Christmas music (after A Classic Christmas). Buy it now, you won't be disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 February 2021In the absence of being able to participate in any Christmas singing (first time in more than 60 years!!) this satisfied my longing for Christmas music. The man is a genius!

5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas finest CD
Excellent Christmas CD by one of the most influential composers of our time. Sung by the wonderful Cambridge singers. Each carol performed beautifully. I listened to the CD back to back a few times. A 'must have' for all carolers and music lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful John Rutter Christmas Album
One of my favorite Christmas traditions is playing Christmas music. In the old days, the music would have been on vinyl. But for me, It now means CD. I had to buy a replacement CD for this recording, because my original CD had developed an annoying skip which no amount of cleaning would eliminate. But I had to get a new CD, because this collection of beautiful songs composed by John Rutter has become my favorite Christmas recording. The music and lyrics are beautiful and meaningful, the choral and solo vocal artistry of The Cambridge Singers is unparalleled. Highly recommended.
