It’s so cool that this great album is now available along with previously unreleased bonus tracks after forty years! The original album remastered sounds as great as ever. For those of us who are admirers of both Clannad and the Robin of Sherwood series it will be the bonus material that is the drawing attraction, as the master tapes have been missing for so many years. Let’s just say that it’s fantastic that this material has finally seen the light of day on official release after all these years! The songs on the bonus disc sound nothing short of amazing. In places they have been embellished ever-so-subtly (almost imperceptibly) with additional instrumentation and vocals. This in no way detracts from the original performance and, if anything, enhances the experience even further.
Anybody familiar with the Robin of Sherwood series will know that there was even more music recorded than is documented on this release. For example, there was the remixed title theme to the third series; the alternative, or early version of the chant that would become ‘Caisleán Óir’ on the Macalla album; and much more. Truly, there was not a bad piece music that Clannad recorded for this series. It was all excellent, and deserves to be heard. If there is any criticism, it is that the rest of this material is not on this release. Perhaps in the future there will be a ‘Legend II’ featuring the remainder of this beautiful and haunting score. I would happily buy this too! Perhaps Clannad and BMG will give serious consideration to this. When Clannad play their last official concert this week, I doubt the world will ever see anything of their like again, or music of this quality. Thank you to Clannad for all the great music over the years – and for this release in particular.
Despite the fact that there is still more material in the can somewhere, this album still gets five stars as the music is so good. Do not hesitate, buy this!
