Product description

The anime feature, directed by Kenji Kamiyama, is set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original trilogy of films. A sudden attack by Wulf, a clever and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking vengeance for the death of his father, forces Helm and his people to make a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg – a mighty fortress that will later come to be known as Helm’s Deep.     I really enjoyed this animated tale. It won't be for everyone but it certainly was for me. Takes place nearly 200 years before the Lord Of The Rings and offers a new tale centred around a female character, Hera, daughter of Helm, the King Of Rohan. Full of action, and suspense.

    When Freca comes to King Helm's Hall with his son Wulf, he suggests a marriage between his son and King Helm's daughter Héra. However, when both King Helm and Hera refuse, conflict breaks out leading to the death of Freca. Years later Wulf returns with an army with every intention of exacting his vengeance by not only taking the lives of King Helm and Hera but destroying their entire kingdom and legacy.

    I enjoyed The War of Rohirrim but it was also a strange experience in that it didn't have the feel of a Lord of the Rings film, it didn't feel part of that same world Peter Jackson had created. This wasn't just because this was an animated film, it could still have felt part of the same world in animated form, it was just the feel of the movie, it felt like it was from a different universe. This might be because it is a somewhat expanded story from an Tolkien's appendices in the Lord of the Rings books rather than a ready fully fleshed out story in Middle Earth. Anyway, despite this it was an enjoyable fantasy adventure with an interesting mix of animation styles and some good voice acting and they even shoehorned a little bit in at the end to link it to Jackson's films so you wouldn't forget about the one ring to rule them all.

    The bad first, the animation style is not perfect, it seems jerky and TV quality at times, but you get used to it and it doesn't get in the way of the story

    An adapted tale, this is the story of Helm Hammerhand and his children, and a fight for mastery of Rohan, in a struggle that presents all the family with their own challenges

    The protagonist is Hera who, like Eowyn before her, seeks m,ore than just the role of a princess of the court, she is curious, brave but not a superhuman. This anime, unlike others, does not give the characters incredible superhuman powers. They can jump a bit more than is normal, but that is true of all of the characters. The only "superhuman" in the sense of physical attributes is Helm himself. Hera is brave, but so are all of Helm's children. Ignore anyone who says that Hera is magical or somehow has abilities the others lack, she does not, she moves in fights exactly as others do, she is not supernaturally strong, she works with her curiousity and determination.

    The addition of Hera to the story does no violence to Tolkien's work, and reflects one of the ideas he puts forward, doing what needs to be done even when no reward or recognition is forthcoming

    Enjoyable, not an epic, but fun
