غ.co.uk Review

With no fewer than eight couples vying for our attention, Love Actually is like the London Marathon of romantic comedies, and everybody wins. Having mastered the genre as the writer of Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, and Bridget Jones's Diary, it appears that first-time director Richard Curtis is just like his screenplays: he just wants to be loved, and he'll go to absurdly appealing lengths to win our affection. With Love Actually, Curtis orchestrates a minor miracle of romantic choreography, guiding a brilliant cast of stars and newcomers as they careen toward love and holiday cheer in London, among them the Prime Minister (Hugh Grant) who's smitten with his caterer (Martine McCutcheon); a widower (Liam Neeson) whose young son nurses the ultimate schoolboy crush; a writer (Colin Firth) who falls for his Portuguese housekeeper; a devoted wife and mother (Emma Thompson) coping with her potentially unfaithful husband (Alan Rickman); and a lovelorn American (Laura Linney) who's desperately attracted to a colleague. There's more--too much more--as Curtis wraps his Christmas gift with enough happy endings to sweeten a dozen other movies. That he pulls it off so entertainingly is undeniably impressive; that he does it so shamelessly suggests that his writing fares better with other, less ingratiating directors. --Jeff Shannon

The DVD arrived after the date advised, but due to volume of Christmas mail, it was delivered 2 days later. Not unreasonable at the busy time of year for postal items.

I never thought I would say this but I think Love Actually may have actually (no pun intended) overtaken 'It's a wonderful life' to become my favourite Christmas film of all time. I've seen a lot of the classic and modern Christmas films and there aren't many which measure up to the quality of Love Actually.

Best romantic-comedy film of all time? I'll be honest: I'm your average bloke who doesn't tend to watch that genre (I haven't seen Bridget Jones's Diary) but I can say it's a very amusing film in parts and it made me feel all warm inside and put a smile on my grumpy face! The opening and closing scenes of the film take something which is so mundane and turn it into a magical experience which restores your faith in humanity.

The cast is exceptional and is chock-a-block with stars such as Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Keira Knightley and Rowan Atkinson. I was already a big fan of 'The Walking Dead' before I first saw Love Actually so it was really weird seeing Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) doing a British accent in a romcom (I'm aware he's British-just use to the American accent in TWD!)

In addition to the exceptional cast the soundtrack is absolutely amazing: Dido, Bay City Rollers, The Beach Boys, The Beatles (well, a cover of a Beatles song) and the choice of music for the scenes is faultless. There is a great scene in the film which you have probably already seen in an internet meme and that's Hugh Grant (who plays the British Prime Minister in the film) dancing to 'Jump (For My Love)' by the Pointer Sisters.

As for the plot, well it's pretty obvious it's all about romance-we see the journey of several couples/people about to become couples in the film and it's wonderful how it all comes together. If you haven't already seen it you're missing out big-time and I expect it will become a tradition for me to watch this every Christmas and who knows...maybe I'll have someone to share it with next Christmas!

Slick, glossy and clever. The film cuts to people in various situations - working in a Advertising / 'Creative' Agency, a TV film company, friends at a wedding, an author writing a book in his French holiday home, 10 Downing Street complete with Prime Minister Hugh Grant, etc. The gist of the film is the personal relationships between people and in particular their search for love - the most basic human need after food. And people are all different, some outgoing and extrovert, others shy and retiring, and many in between the two. The differing personalities are all beautifully depicted and there are a lot of very funny situations and conversations. But hidden beneath the glamour and the face we present in public, is the sensitive, easily hurt part of our nature - which is also seen, particularly in the receptionist whose mobile phone seems to be always ringing, and which she just has to answer no matter what the situation. Even at a deliriously happy moment when she is becoming intimately acquainted - for the first time - with a shy colleague from work. And of course the evening is ruined and the relationship falls apart. The initial reaction is what a stupid dumbo, why the hell doesn't she turn the bloody thing off - and then comes the hammer blow that leaves you reeling, if not actually crying - cut to said lady, a little later, in a face to face 'conversation' with her mentally ill brother who, prone to violent outbursts, has to have a minder with him at all times. You then realise the reason she has to be 'on call' at all times, but has not wanted to tell anyone about her brother. And there are other similar heart - wrenching moments, although not quite as extreme.

So, yes, the film is a bit over the top, a bit exaggerated, but it still works perfectly, has the perfect balance of humour and seriousness, and is one that I would see over and over again.

My wife loves this film and raves about it, so I got the dvd for her as one of her Christmas presents . Has she watched it since - of course not.

I admit I’m rubbish at buying presents. Personally I prefer practical presents, so the whimsical, thoughtful presents are outside of my understanding.

I really tried to listen and understand, and thought I’d nailed it here. I give up

When I first saw this film at the cinema, my initial thoughts were the film was ok but not brillant. This film has had a regular slot on tv and everytime it is on, I always found myself sitting down to watch it.

I have grown to love this film, each time I see it, I seem to learn something more about love, (I know completely daft but that is how I feel)so much so that when my recording digital box deleted the film to make more space I was annoyed and quite upset. Then I remembered غ and ordered myself a copy.

One of my mistakes with this film was because it was a rom/com I dismissed it as a fluffy film. Like a take-away, enjoyable at the time but forgettable.

As the years have gone by some of the scenes in the film have stayed with me and have become more and more powerful. The man in love with his best friend's wife, the school boy tortured by his love for a girl out of his legal. The happy go lucky chap who is happy with any kind of love but the closing scences as the credits role make me cry the most. To see pure joy expressed on the faces of individuals as they meet loved ones, for a moment your breath stops and then life goes on.

This film has something to say to everyone.

A veces apetecen peliculas mas duras o complejas. Pero esta es como un balsamo que te deja relajado, feliz y emocionado.
El blue ray de Reino Unido es en castellano, lo acabo de recibir, para seguir viendola mas veces. ;-)
