Product description

The brand-new album by David Gilmour, ‘Luck and Strange’ was recorded over five months in Brighton and London and is Gilmour’s first album of new material in nine years. The record was produced by David and Charlie Andrew, ideal known for his work with ALT-J and Marika Hackman, with lyrics mostly written by Polly Samson, Gilmour’s co-writer for the past thirty years. The album features eight new tracks along with a beautiful reworking of The Montgolfier Brothers’ ‘Between Two Points’, which sees Romany Gilmour, who performs backing vocals across the album, on vocals and harp. Musicians contributing to the record include Guy Pratt and Tom Herbert on bass, Adam Betts, Steve Gadd and Steve DiStanislao on drums, Rob Gentry and Roger Eno on keyboards and the string and choral arrangements are by Will Gardner. The title track also features the late Pink Floyd keyboard player Richard Wright, recorded in 2007 during a ‘Barn Jam’ at David’s house. The album’s cover image, photographed and designed by renowned artist Anton Corbijn, is inspired by lyrics written by Charlie Gilmour for the album’s final song ‘Scattered’. Gatefold sleeve and booklet with photography and design by Anton Corbijn.

Seems a bit short
It definitely needs a few listens. I bought the bluray and the sound production is superb. I've looked over my left shoulder several times to look for a choir! As it runs seamlessly, the guitar solos as you'd expect are, just that, however the change to the Gibson and addition of other guitars is where the playing sounds different and new.As my review title implies, I was a bit disappointed that it very quickly seems to go to padding with "Ghosts" and the Barn Jam up very quickly, however that there are 30 Barn Jams, it's encouraging that perhaps someday we'll get them all packaged together.Looking forward to the next if Phil Manzanera isn't already beavering away on something while DG goes out on tour albeit Phil has his own retrospective at the moment.

Really didn't like this album when I first heard it online so decided not to buy it. As time came and went it grew on me to the point that I had to have it. So bought it on vinyl and sounds fantastic. Recommended 5*.

I was expecting both CD and Blu-ray disk, as the description states both, but only arrived with a Blu-ray disk. Very disappointed.

Excellent quality vinyl pressings. Not a pop, hiss or skip to be heard. The music itself is superb with excellent production and great songs. Please don't judge it against Pink Floyd ( it always annoys me when reviewers expect solo efforts to be the same as a band's material ). It's a David Gilmour album and as such has to be assessed as something else in its own right. As well as the four vinyl records you also get a top notch atmos mix on the included blu ray in this deluxe edition, along with a book of photos by Mrs Gilmour.

A remarkable album on Dolby Atmos bringing the auditorium sound into your living room, a well balanced sound from a man with high musical standards.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great

I wanted an analog version of David Gilmour's latest masterpiece. The album is amazing. The artwork and cover are great. I've read some reviews of the sound quality not being good on vinyl? I have heard no issues whatsoever with my vinyl copy. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars An astonishing masterpiece, and perhaps Mr Gilmour's best-ever guitar work 😮
Reviewed in the United States on 5 December 2024
Leading up to the release of Luck & Strange, Mr Gilmour said he thought it was the best thing he had done since Dark Side of the Moon. Which seemed odd to me, since he's on record as saying WYWH is his favorite PF album. So it seemed like some marketing hype and I thought he'd be hard pressed to match or exceed On An Island.

The first time I listened to Luck and Strange, I didn't think he had. By the third or fourth listen, I was agreeing that it could indeed stand toe-to-toe with the legendary albums he crafted with PF in the '70s. His guitar work is astonishing, the lyrics are weighty without being overwhelming, and the inclusion of Romany adds a fresh and poignant vibe that his other albums haven't had.

I think, in time, the solo on "Scattered" will be held in the same regard as his solos on "Time" and "Comfortably Numb." The last time I listened to it (on the day I turned 53), it brought a tear or two to the eye. So glad I could see him at the Intuit Dome in October.

Album of the year for me, easily. Wonder if any Grammy hardware might be forthcoming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vermutlich sein bestes Soloalbum

Das Album ist definitiv besser als die letzten beiden Soloalben. Nach mehrfachen Anhören binich zu dem Entschluss gekommen, dass es sein Debüt sogar toppt. Absolute Kaufempfehlung.
