Stages

The Advanced deck is categorised into 4 stages; Goal, Reality, Options, and Way Forward. Each stage has 20 questions that will stimulate goal setting.

Advanced GROW question cards offer line managers a coaching tool to aid their coaching skills.

Questions

Each coaching card has a an open question starting with What, Why, Who, Where, When or How, so that the coach doesn't lead the coachee.

Advanced GROW Cards are written by an expert to stimulate advanced goal setting & problem solving.

Colour

Each stage is a different colour to make it easy to separate the stages. Each card is numbered so you can pick out which questions you want to ask.

Advanced GROW cards can be used in 1-2-1 meetings to enable the line manager to coach not tell.

How to Use these Advanced GROW Coaching Cards.

  • Book a meeting with your coachee for 30-60 minutes. Start with the whole deck of +80 cards in front of you.
  • Shuffle through and separate your 4 GROW question phases into individual piles.
  • Begin with the 20 ‘Goal’ stage cards in your hand.
  • Pick out the most appropriate questions from these first 20 cards. You do not need to ask all 20 questions.
  • Repeat the above steps for the other 3 stages; Reality, Options, and Way Forward.

    The cards have questions that are a real variety. Some of them I would consider to be really obvious; others are fairly unusual to the point that I might not actually feel comfortable asking them because I could imagine some coachees being a bit confused or even put off by how strange the questions appear to them. But I suppose the questions provide a range of options for discussion, so they are not bad.

    One thing I liked less is all of the MBM branding and advertising. MBM is a training company and there are quite a few cards mixed into the deck offering training courses and advertising for other products sold by the company. I had to work through the decks picking out all of these and throwing them away.

    Overall, the cards provide some options if you are looking for some ideas for questions to ask. But it's also not a cheap tool for a number of questions - many of which you could get from doing a bit of research online.

    This box contains 80 question prompts and a couple of additional instruction/ information cards. The box itself arrived a bit damaged, but overall design is appropriate for visible shelf storage or the like if preferred.
    After having these for a couple of weeks however, I note some bending in the card set, as the box is slightly loose, and the cards have a gloss/matte side (worsened by heat/high humidity) - but this is great to reduce slipping while handling/stacking.
    The cards are a good size for planning board work and text/print is clean and crisp. The edge cut of the card is a little rough as they are un-glossed.
    Prompt questions are helpful and to encourage helpful reflective practice. They are divided into sections of differing focus to help locate the most appropriate prompts for a coaching session.
