Product description

Classic fantasy from Powell and Pressburger in which an RAF pilot must argue for his life in a celestial trial after a mix-up sees him survive a fall from his plane. When Peter Carter (David Niven)'s plane is struck on his way back to England from a bombing mission and his parachute destroyed, he prepares himself for death. Incredibly, however, he awakes safely on the ground the next day. It turns out that the emissary sent from Heaven to carry him to Heaven, Conductor 71 (Marius Goring), was unable to locate him in the fog, but has now arrived to take him to the next world. Carter refuses to go, having fallen in love with the radio operator, June (Kim Hunter), who talked to him while the plane was going down. A trial is convened in Heaven to see if Carter should be allowed to live on. Will the pilot be able to convince the court that his love for June is strong enough that he should be given another chance?

Overflowing lack of extras
What ho! I ordered this in mid August and hoped the continued delay of the release was due to ITV Studios adding fresh extras to keep us enthusiasts happy. No chance. There's biographies of the cast and a 1998 feature on cinematographer Jack Cardiff similar to earlier releases. If your blu ray player can handle region A discs the American criterion release has to be the way to go. Why have ITV studios done this to us? Even If there's copyright issues regarding the Criterion release ITV should have made more of an effort to provide some interesting extras for this masterpiece to complement the excellent 4K scan of the film. They should be ashamed of themselves.Five stars for the film of course and the the picture is now truly wonderful with a silky smooth clarity. Watching the colour scenes is like looking through a window!

This is an essential purchase for film fans, one of the most beautifully shot and well acted films of all time.

When pilot Peter Carter (Niven) is shot down he must convince celestial hosts that he deserves to be alive and its his connection to the American radio tower operator June (Hunter) that convinces him of the need to fight for life, his celestial host is unable to claim him because of bad weather (how British) and he gets to spend a little time with June before he is found, his host finally finds him and stops time to explain what has happened and how he must accept his death, he demands to live and is granted three more days of life while his appeal is prepared but June and her Dr friend think it is all a hallucination brought on by a brain injury sustained a few years earlier.

When the good Dr is killed he becomes Peter's counsel in heaven and argues for Peter's life concurrent to him receiving brain surgery back in the real world, to say anymore would be to ruin one of the greatest films ever made and by the amazing Powell & Pressburger combination you know what you are going to get, a sumptuously shot excellent photographed and superbly acted masterpiece, there really is no excuse to not have watched this film if you claim to be any kind of film fan.

I first saw this film when I was about 10/11. And have always loved it. Even when it comes on the tv, I always put it onto record. So I was well pleased when I found it on ÍøÆغÚÁÏ. And besides what’s wrong with David Niven. Nothing as far as I can see… sadly missed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fantasy
Reviewed in Canada on 18 August 2022
They don't make them like this anymore. Today, all of our film fantasies are delivered via cartoon characters, or as myths that inhabit fantastic worlds circa GOT or LOTR. Real people have been largely relegated to supporting roles. So, it's refreshing to see a film fantasy that has people you can relate to front & centre.
Now, that's not to say that this film isn't a fantasy, because it is. However, the way the fantasy is presented, your credulity isn't asked to stretch too far.
The time is 1944 & WWII is is still going full throttle. David Niven is a RAF bomber pilot who's plane is on fire & going to crash. He manages to reach an American radio operator, played to perfection by Kim Hunter, who will be the last person he's ever going to talk to. I don't want to spoil the magic of their exchange. Suffice to say that, in the few minutes they talk, they fall in love. Of course, this could only happen in the movies, but, this is a movie, so be quiet & pay attention. Niven jumps, sans parachute or hopes of survival.
He wakes up on a beach & figures that he's entered the hereafter. Instead, he meets J for June, the radio operator he spoke with. They're immediately even more smitten with each other.
And they lived happily ever after, except that Niven was supposed to die when he jumped from his plane. However, the angel who was sent to guide his soul to the hereafter missed him in the accursed English fog. When the angel, played with delicate panache by Marius Goring, appears & summons Niven to Heaven, Niven protests that he shouldn't have to go because of the love he's found with June. The angel, never having had this happen before, retreats to the celestial domain to consult with his superiors.
Did I mention how great the movie is to watch. Technicolour was still relatively new in 1946, but this film is bathed in it. As for the acting,. David Niven is David Niven. In every film I've watch him in, I've seen seen him play a character I didn't believe. And, he made it look effortless. Kim Hunter is nothing less than great as his love interest, WAC radio op June, a Yank farm girl from the Midwest who's found her soulmate & doesn't intend to let Heaven interfere with their happiness. Robert Livesey plays the rustic country saw bones who diagnosis Niven with a physiological cause for his visits with Goring's angel & then, in nice twist . . . but, I won't give it away.
You can watch this as a fantasy, or as a romance, or as the kind of movie you don't see anymore, even on Netflix. However you want to view it, do have a look. The popcorn will stay buttered.
