DEC 443482; DECCA - Inghilterra; Classica vocale Sacra Messe
ÍøÆغÚÁÏ.co.uk
One of the most grand and eloquent liturgical works ever written, Monteverdi's Vespers has enjoyed near-perpetual favour with performers and listeners since its composition in 1610. It may have been written for use as an "audition" piece for the position of maestro di cappella at the famed St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice. Whatever its motivation, this is a most ambitious and stylistically fascinating compendium that sets out the eight chants of the Mass Ordinary, interspersed with four motets and an instrumental piece. The 90-minute work includes soloists, chorus, and orchestra. Not until Bach would there be a religious work on this scale. Gardiner and his Monteverdi Choir adopt a decidedly "un-period" sound on this mid-1970s recording, with free vocal vibrato and a mix of modern and period instruments. This two-for-one disc set also includes motets by Monteverdi, Gabrieli, and Bassani. --David Vernier

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 January 2023Excellent service.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 May 2016This is the version with PJ Brass, so is using trumpets and trombones instead of the original cornetts and sackbuts that can be found it later recordings. I prefer this version, but I know it won't be to everyone's taste.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 October 2023Gardiner has done the Vespers a number of times and this is the best version out of them - but its a pity that it doesn't contain the chants between each of the musical pieces (hence only four stars). The filler tracks at the end of cd 2 are ok but I doubt I'll ever return to them for further listening, unlike the Vespers which I can listen to time and time again (over the many differing cd's I have of the performances) without ever getting bored (except for Parrot's 'minimalised' version which I wouldn't recommend at all).
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 January 2017This is the best version of Monteverdi's Vespers on CD it like being there at the concert hearing it live , you have to get this version .
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 November 2015This is undoubtedly the richest and most substantial single work of church music prior to Bach's Passions. To experience it is a major event. The choir and orchestra do this magnificent work proud.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 May 2019Exactly as I'd hoped. Very fast delivery as well
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 December 2019This was a brilliant performance
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 August 2019If you like Monteverdi you will like this but it is also worth hearing other versions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Monteverdi Vespro della beata vergine

4.0 out of 5 stars Una preghiera bellissima
