This version of the requiem benefits from the expert control of the orchestra and singers by the renowned John Eliot Gardiner, who is no stranger to conducting religious works. Although the soloists, on the whole, perform well, I would have liked the soprano to have sung with more volume, since to me her voice came over a bit thin. On the other hand I was pleased to have the much celebrated Willard White included in the soloists as I regard him as one of the best bass singers of the modern era. I consider this requiem to be one the greatest works of its type ever written.

I was recommended this disc, and I like it very much. What stroke me, was Gardiners ability to *not* push the music. It breathes naturally, which I think suits the music very well. Many of the "hidden lines" are heard because of his not pushing, and not using to much sound in the orchestra. The chorus are delivering a subtle and articulated account. Barbara Bonney delivers some beautiful phrasing indeed ! Highly recommended.

I loved listening to a fine performance of this requiem. It's a piece that I hope to be learning once choirs are allowed to sing again and listening to the cd will help.

Not a big fan of Mozart- more a Beethoven fan- but I just happened to hear this on a TV programme. Only an excerpt but wanted to hear more. Happy with purchase and the only reason for four stars is still prefer Beethoven. But all reviews are subjective.

It came with German text on the disc and paperwork which a) isn't a problem for a CD and b) seemed vaguely appropriate. The disc actually came from the US so took a few days but I wasn't in a hurry.

Good clear open sound. Enough singers for me. I prefer this to my existing Berliner Philharmoniker on Deutsche Grammophon which seemed a bit muddy to my old ears.

Besides being probably one of the finest pieces of musical composition ever, this version is performed with great sensitivity and finesse. A wonder ous thing.

This is the sort of performance that got JEG his name - absolutely brilliant in every respect. If you want this work, you will not get anything better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Une version baroque et romantique...
Reviewed in France on 8 February 2012

5.0 out of 5 stars No wobbly vibratos (thank goodness)
Reviewed in the United States on 22 July 2002
An avid Mozart listener, I find the modern renditions of his breathtaking music most often too heavy handed, with too much sound too much of the time. In this more traditional recording, we rediscover the lightness and clarity of sound that Mozart is known for. Thank goodness--no more Verdi-esque performances by artists who believe they are singing the dramatic Romantic solos instead of the more precise Classical solo. The clarity of tone and the beautiful singing are what draws me, the classical singer, again and again to this gorgeous piece, finally rendered by singers with precise pitch. The CD remains fitting homage to a brilliant composer and without a doubt one of the jewels in my collection.
