At this time, I am yet to see a squirrel on it but they are about and they like the tree its on so IF I can get a pic of them on it, I'll try and add that to this review.

Why does mine look different to the picture? I used Rosewood woodstain for weatherproofing as the description clearly states that it has not been treated. This is 2 coats of woodstain and considering I have never stained any wood before, I think it looks pretty good. The original material is some kind of pine.

We don't have any nuts in the house due to allergies so as a taster, I have given our squirrel friends sunflower seeds. If nothing else, at least the robin likes them!

Its worth noting that its not the strongest built piece of wood in the world but should be able to take a couple of squirrels quite easily.

I think the box has had a minor redesign as the bottom is now held on with 2 screws instead of pin nails (as another review mentioned). Another advantage of the staining is that it adds a small amount of additional gluelike holding to the box to keep it together.

I have also seen reviews where the bottom has fallen off, the perspex has been damaged or broken (or taken by some creature) and some of these things you just can't help, its outdoors and they are wild animals!

If I was to make a suggestion to update the design it would be to make the back piece of wood longer and add a second screw hole at the bottom to make mounting it a little sturdier. Other than that, looks good and will find out about its durability in due course.

Squirrel has discovered it. There are 3 locals so sure it won't be long until the rest discover it. Seems to take their weight quite well so far

Looking at its ��غ�� photos we thought this looked like a rather clever (from a squirrel’s point of view) and altogether nice-looking squirrel-feeder. But ‘in the flesh’ it’s VERY badly let down by its design-detailing and, unless ours is a ‘rogue’ one, we’re completely mystified by those reviewers who suggest it’s even-remotely “well made”. Ours sure ain't.

Worst of all, Navaris highlight in their main title that it's "Durable" - even giving that IMPORTANT and ESSENTIAL claim a capital D! - and in their Product Description Navaris go on to claim that it's "very durable and resistant to any weather condition - ideal for winter". So, and ENTIRELY due to what Navaris claim about its “durability”, we went ahead and bought one.
Silly, SILLY, us!

Navaris’ Product Description shows (only) a red squirrel, not a grey, so for reds (like very-lucky-us) we are talking primarily about wet countries. Yes, the Navaris small-print does recommend that its wood “should be treated with a protective oil for added weather resistance and durability” …. But Come On Navaris, seriously, what IS THIS?! - the feeder’s weather-design and detailing and its overall durability for red-squirrel habitats are all simply ridiculous.
1. Despite Navaris’ ‘Protection from rain’ claims (inc its ‘iron’ roof!) the whole thing is VERY poorly-detailed in terms of weathering and durability - very poor joint-detailing, very poor-to-non-existent wet-weather detailing especially of the Perspex window, no effective water-drip grooves, no attempt at vented-roof detailing, no rust-resistant external-quality screws or nails, no ventilation-provision to help keep the food from spoiling. It all seems VERY surprising - and QUITE extraordinary after Navaris’ durability claims: the whole thing is simply designed to rot.
2. Quite apart from its catalogue of design-defects, at least in wet Northern Europe red-squirrel country, it simply HAS to be treated, not just “Recommended to be treated”. So then which “protective oil treatment” will realistically achieve anything even remotely close to the durability that Navaris wish to claim: why, pray-tell, is that magic-sounding “oil” not a very famous product in “The effective protection of outside wood” world?!! Are Navaris talking about decking “oil” or about which “protective oil”? Do please tell us, Navaris!
3. So we are left fundamentally disillusioned by Navaris and their claims - but that said our short-term-view Scottish red-squirrels definitely (and so-far!) appreciate their feeder a lot more than we do. So Yes, the design ‘works’ as a feeder - that’s until it so-ridiculously falls apart and/or rots.
4. (OK, given an hour or so at the workbench the whole thing could be pulled apart (that wouldn’t be difficult!) and re-detailed and rebuilt a whole lot better. And good microporous paint (for instance Valtti Opaque) or, less effectively, decking-oil could then start to make it reasonably durable in red-squirrel country. Meanwhile it’s a ridiculous joke.)
