KENNEDY NIGEL AND THE KROKE BA
ÍøÆغÚÁÏ.co.uk
One of the first musicians to "crossover" from classical music, Nigel Kennedy continues to blur the boundaries with the release of his Greatest Hits album, a title which is normally the preserve of pop artists.
As a whole, the album is essentially a sampler for Kennedy's substantial EMI back catalogue and celebrates his 18-year career with the label. Disc one is filled with sweeteners, such as Massenet's "Méditation", Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending and a couple of movements from his record-breaking recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, while disc two contains one movement each from eight of Kennedy's concerto recordings, namely the Mendelssohn, Bruch, Elgar, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Sibelius and Beethoven as well as the Bach double. Perhaps these tasters will encourage new listeners to fork out for the complete recordings.
There is no sign of Kennedy's experiments with the music of The Doors and Jimi Hendrix (which will be a relief to many) but there are a few little gems to be found. A vigorous and very breathy new recording of the fourth movement of the Bach solo sonata in C demands repeated listening while the slightly wayward performance of Monti's showstopping °ä²õá°ù»åá²õ with Polish klezmer band Kroke provides a taster of Kennedy's next disc. --Rebecca Agnew

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 October 2011Eighteen years with one recording label, this is a compilation of some from the back catalogue; if, like me, you are an avid Kennedy collector and fan, there is a little repetition but this is an excellent collection and hearing something wonderful twice is no hardship, especially at this price.
Highly recommended
PS Having recently attended a Late Prom to hear Kennedy play Bach, I really enjoyed this CD. I have heard him play in classical surroundings and modern jazz settings and always marvelled at his virtuosity and versatility on the four-string Guarneri Del Gasu violin, made in 1735, and the five-strong electric but his personality is no less fascinating. Usually looking as if he needs physically refreshing but spiritually like a corked champagne bottle about to erupt, his hair spiked and shiny, his dull Doc Martins needing a shine, the usual scarf around his waist and the loose jacket, he is always vitally rejuvenating; he often exudes feelings which suggests he is not sure he should be standing where he is and he is always so appreciative of applause.
When he plays, the sound lifts one up and everything else is reduced to mere trivia. In many ways, the relaxed atmosphere of the Proms is ideal for Kennedy. Beginning late at 11.15pm, the atmosphere was its usual light-hearted, knowledgeable self; by 11.20pm, 5,250 people were hushed. At 11.40pm, some of the classical, Bach enthusiasts left as the jazz seemed about to begin or, perhaps, they were just tired - two concerts, a long day ... A joy!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 June 2011Here is a compilation that makes the spirit soar. Of course the baroque pieces are here; of course Bach is here; but so too is a spell-binding rendition of Ralph Vaughn Williams `The lark ascending' that raises the hairs on the back of your neck with each playing. As we hear the lark soaring high above us in song, and then fly over the fields, and then rise again, we are carried away to tranquillity and artistry that is just magnificent; and so rare to find in today's rising stars.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 April 2017Great album in true Kennedy fashion. As a Vaughan Williams fan I was keen on Lark Ascending. His interpretation is special and a slower tempo than any of the others that I have heard. A bit odd at first hearing but it grows on you and transmits a great deal of feeling and emotion. His Vivaldi is powerful and unique also. Well recommended.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 February 2021A great collection of vintage classics from Nigel Kennedy at his best and covering his early years. Highly pleasurable and Kennedy demonstrates his mastery of many of most familiar violin concertos
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 December 2013purchased this CD because of one particular track composed by Nigel himself which was played at "Last night at the Proms" in Hyde Park - now being enjoyed by a violin playing 4 yr old granddaughter!
