Our Nintendo Wii dicided to die so we got the Wii U to replace it. I'm really pleased that we can still play our old Wii games on it as well as play new Wii U games. My only disappointment is that I was unable to load up my Wii Fit history from my old Wii because it was in such bad condition. (My memories of being skinny lost forever!)
My son is loving playing the machine and we now fight over the TV but it's a fun and active distraction. It was second hand but it was in very good condition. Very pleased.

Nintendo WiiU deserves 10 stars. Couldn't do 10, and also decided to drop one star as the box didn't have the promised start up instructions. Turned out I didn't need them as it just about set up itself. Unlike the original WiiU the problem with setting up a wireless connection didn't happen, fixed over time I suppose by Nintendo. I could also have dropped another star very heavily on Nintendo's toes for not being clear anywhere that I could see that when when I replaced my old console with the new one all my other Nintendo downloads were wiped out, and also the DLC pack for Breath of the Wild had to be purchased again. There is no way I can find to re-download my other Zelda games, all are asking for them to be paid for again. I checked out transferring data but decided safest not to do that as there's a risk, if I read the notes properly, that my old Nintendo would change the new one to the older format. Couldn't risk that, can't afford to download the other games again, and am grateful that I also own the discs or I'd not be able to play the games again. WiiU is a very underestimated thing though and I'm sad to see it being replaced by the Switch.

Most underated console. I got this one for my office, we've had one at home since 2014. Phenomenal line up of local multiplayer games. However it has to be the best example of the worst marketing for a console of all time. Other than some extreme Nintendo fanboys, almost no one actually understood what this was.
It could have been so much more as well. I loved the elements of asynchronous play that some games (Nintendoland) showed, but sadly Nintendo were their own downfall.
If you've got a family I would still recommend this console as the best for local multiplayer games. Especially if you pick up Super Smash Bros with 8 controllers, or Runbow which can handle 9 on the same screen.

It's used, but it works every time. The battery in the tablet lasts a decent amount of time. The screen is decently clear, a bit of scuff around the edges but no major scratches. I'm only playing games from discs and it has loaded everyone I've bought (around 20 so far). All the cables look new and all the ports are snug. Für einen Besitzer aller Nintendokonsolen seit dem SNES habe ich lange Zeit über den Kauf der Wii U gegrübelt. Die Idee, einen Tabletcontroller (ab jetzt 'Gamepad') als Standardeingabegerät zu nutzen, empfand ich persönlich als eher fragwürdig gut. Würde sich das Gamepad gut nutzen lassen, ohne dabei unhandlich und unbequem zu werden? Vor allem störte mich in gewisser Weise, dass Nintendo mir die "Armfreiheit", die sich aus Wii Remote und Nunchuk ergab, wieder wegnehmen wollte, um meine Hände wieder an ein einzelnes Steuergerät anzulegen.

Schließlich und endlich habe ich mich doch entschlossen, der neuen Konsole eine Chance zu geben. Unter Strich kann ich jetzt schon einmal erwähnen, dass mein Vertrauen in Nintendo nicht enttäuscht wurde. Aber der Reihe nach...

=== Wahl des Pakets ===

Anfangs war ich mir bei Weitem nicht sicher, welches Bundle ich nehmen sollte. Da war auf der einen Seite die weiße Wii U als Basisvariante, auf der anderen Seite die schwarze Wii U Premium. Entschieden habe ich mich schließlich für die Premiumversion, aus verschiedenen Gründen:

- 32GB statt 8GB Flashspeicher: Beides ist weiß Gott nicht viel Speicher in der heutigen Zeit und ich habe mich bereits darauf vorbereitet, eine externe HDD anzuschließen. Doch unter dem Gesichtspunkt, dass die neue Konsole eine Weile halten soll und Updates erfolgen, ist es besser mehr Reserven zu haben als bloß die 3GB, die bei der weißen Wii U noch frei bleiben
- Die Farbe: Vielen wird die weiße Wii U äußerlich besser gefallen als die schwarze. Ich bin da eher neutral herangegangen, habe ich mich dann aber, wenn man rückblickend anmerkt, dass die weiße Wii dazu neigte, sich mit der Zeit etwas in Richtung gelb zu verfärben, sagte mir hier auch die schwarze Wii U mehr zu.
- Beigaben: Die Ständer für Gamepad und Konsole interessieren mich nicht wirklich, da sie fast nichts wert sind und für einen einstelligen Euro-Betrag jederzeit nachgekauft werden können. Nintendoland empfand ich da schon wesentlich interessanter, wer sich aber für diese Minispielsammlung nicht interessiert, findet bei den Beigaben wohl keinen sonderlichen Anreiz.

Betrachtet man den Mehrwert, den man durch die Premiumversion erhält, sollte die Wahl eigentlich recht einfach fallen. Speicherupgrade + Nintendoland sind mir einen Aufpreis von 50€ in jedem Falle wert. Noch eine Anmerkung zum ZombieU-Bundle: Hat man kein Interesse an Nintendoland, dafür an ZombieU, so sollte man bei diesem Paket zugreifen. Da ich aber sowohl Nintendoland als auch ZombieU möchte, ist es ingesamt günstiger, die normale Premiumversion zu nehmen und ZombieU dazuzukaufen (rein rechnerisch wird für den Pro Controller ca. ein Aufpreis von 50€ veranschlagt beim ZombieU-Bundle, den Pro Controller bekommt man jedoch bereits für 45€ einzeln)

Ich denke, jeder liebt dieses Gefühl, eine frische Konsole aus dem Karton auszupacken. Obwohl ich das bereits >10 mal gemacht habe, ist es immernoch ein tolles Gefühl. Besitzer der alten Wii werden sich hierbei direkt an das Auspacken der Wii erinnern, da der Karton der Wii U prinzipiell genauso aufgebaut ist.

=== Anschluss an die anderen Geräte ===

Angeschlossen habe ich die Wii U an einen 37''-FullHD Fernseher per HDMI, von da habe ich den Ton an meinen AV-Receiver weitergereicht. Per Wlan ist die Wii U mit einer Fritzbox 7390 verbunden, bis jetzt habe ich da noch keine Probleme erlebt.
Eine kleine Anmerkung zu AV-Receivern. Soweit ich das mitbekommen habe, wird der Ton von der Wii U als PCM-Signal ausgegeben. Solltet ihr beim direkten Anschluss an euren AV-Receiver keinen Ton bekommen, so liegt das vermutlich (wie bei mir auch) daran, dass der AV-Receiver nicht mit PCM-Signalen umgehen kann.

=== Erster Start ===

Entgegen vieler Empfehlungen aus dem Internet habe ich direkt nach der Ersteinrichtung das Update gestartet und es durchlaufen lassen. Bei mir hat es ca. 55min gebraucht und lief einwandfrei durch. Ab und zu habe ich gelesen, dass die Wii U angeblich funktionsuntüchtig wird, wenn während des Updates die Wlan-Verbindung abbricht oder es einen Stromausfall gibt. Ersteres ist Unsinn, da zum einen die Daten erst heruntergeladen werden, zum anderen, weil es Berichte gibt, dass die Wii U - nachdem die Verbindung wiederhergestellt wurde - das Update fortgesetzt hat und nicht neugestartet hat.
Bei einem Stromausfall verhält es sich teilweise anders. Passiert dies, während die Wii U noch das Update herunterlädt (ca. 80% der Zeit), so hat dies keine negativen Folgen. Nur, wenn während der Installation des Updates der Strom ausfällt, kann man das Ding wieder einpacken und versuchen, es umzutauschen. Dies ist allerdings kein alleiniges Problem der Wii U sondern die ganz normale Folge, wenn ein Firmwareupdate unkontrolliert abgebrochen wird. Wer wirklich so doof ist, den Stecker zu ziehen, weil ihm/ihr das Update zu lange dauert, ist selbst schuld und verdient in meinen Augen kein Ersatzgerät.

Kommen wir nun also endlich zum relevanten Teil dieser Rezension:

Insgesamt bin ich durchaus zufrieden mit dem Betriebssystem der Wii U. Wer eine Wii oder einen Handheld seit dem Nintendo DSi hatte, wird sich damit recht schnell zurechtfinden. So richtig performant ist es bis jetzt noch nicht, aber man sollte Nintendo ruhig noch ein Jahr Zeit einräumen, um die Geschwindigkeit zu verbessern (das gestrige Update hat ja bereits geholfen).

Neu sind bei der Wii U vor allem zwei Dinge: Die Nintendo Network ID und das Miiverse. Mit der Network ID hat sich Nintendo nun endlich von den veralteten und unbequemen Freundescodes verabschiedet und eine einzelne ID pro Konsole eingeführt.
Toll ist mMn. auch das Miiverse. Im Prinzip handelt es sich hierbei um eine soziale Plattform, auf der man sich über Spiele austauschen und Screenshots posten kann. Je nach Spiel geht dabei die Funktionalität noch weiter, z.B. kann man bei New Super Mario Bros. U anzeigen, auf welches Level sich der jeweilige Post bezieht. Postet man Hinweise zu einem Spiel, kann man diese auch als Spoiler markieren, um andern nicht die Lösung zu zeigen, obwohl diese sie selbst finden wollten.

Der eShop ist zwar schon von der Wii bekannt, wurde aber massiv überarbeitet und ist bei Weitem nicht mehr so eine lahme Krücke. Demos zu einigen aktuellen Spielen sollen noch kommen, bis jetzt ist allerdings lediglich eine Demo zu Fifa13 vorhanden.

=== Das Gamepad ===

Ich bin wirklich positiv vom Gamepad überrascht. Es liegt ziemlich gut in der Hand und ist nicht zu schwer, um für einige Sekunden eine Hand wegzunehmen und auf dem Touchscreen herumzudrücken. Für Spiele, die aber massiven Einsatz des Touchscreens erfordern, ist es dann doch zu schwer und sollte je nach Sitz-/Liegeposition auf Tisch oder Schoß abgelegt werden.
Das eingebaute Display ist gut, aber nicht überragend, dafür fehlen dann noch einige Bildpunkte. Spielt man ausschließlich auf dem Gamepad und hat den Vergleich zum TV, so merkt man, dass das Bild auf dem Display nicht an einen TV herankommt.
Die Akkulaufzeit ist ok. Sie beträgt bei moderater Helligkeit zwar nur 3Std., bedenkt man aber, dass nicht nur der Bildschirm Strom benötigt, sondern auch das eingebaute Wlan-Modul ständig funkt, kämen Smartphones ohne einen dicken Akku auch nicht auf viel bessere Laufzeiten. Insgesamt konnte ich die Laufzeit noch auf ca. 4-4,5h erhöhen, indem ich die Helligkeit des Displays verringerte und den Energiesparmodus aktivierte. Trotzdem werde ich wohl zu einem Zusatzakku greifen, sobald einer verfügbar ist.

=== Sonstige Peripherie ===

Das Gamepad ist zwar der primäre Controller für die Wii U, es gibt aber noch einige andere Eingabegeräte, die genutzt werden können. Dazu zählen in erster Linie die Wii Remotes + Nunchuk und der Pro Controller, grundsätzlich sind aber meines Wissens alle Geräte, die es bereits für die Wii gab, kompatibel, mit Ausnahme des Classic Controllers.

=== Angebot an Videospielen ===

Für einen Launch hat die Wii U ein relativ großes Startaufgebot an Videospielen. Einige davon sind Portierungen guter Titel (Mass Effect 3, Darksiders 2, Assassin's Creed 3, usw.), andere sind exklusiv entwickelte Titel, z.B. New Super Mario Bros. U (NSMBU), Nintendoland, ZombieU.
Grafisch ist davon kein Titel hammermäßig, bei Nintendoland merkt man aber bereits, dass die Wii U einige sehr gute Beleuchtungseffekte flüssig auf zwei Bildschirmen (TV+Gamepad) darstellen. NSMBU sieht vom ArtDesign für mein Empfinden auch großartig aus, noch nie sahen die Nintendocharaktere besser/schärfer aus.

In Zukunft wird die Grafikqualität mit Sicherheit noch besser werden, man merkt den portierten Titeln auf jeden Fall an, dass sie zuerst für die eher CPU-lastigen Konsolen Xbox360 und PS3 entwickelt wurden und dann auf die eher GPU-lastige Wii U portiert wurden. Weiter kann und möchte ich mich dazu aber nicht äußern, da sich meine Kenntnisse auf angelesenes Wissen und ein noch laufendes Informatikstudium beschränken.

=== Abwärtskompatibilität ===

Mit dem ersten Update wurde die Abwärtskompatibilität zur Wii freigeschaltet. Damit ist die Wii U vollständig kompatibel zur Wii und man hat Zugriff auf eine riesige Auswahl an Wii Spielen, unter denen sich einige richtig gute Spiele befinden. Die Grafik wird hierbei gut hochskaliert, sodass Wii Spiele auf der Wii U besser aussehen.

=== DAS FAZIT ===

Trotz anfänglicher Skepsis habe ich mich für den Kauf einer Wii U entschieden. Ich wurde absolut nicht enttäuscht. Mit dem neuen Gamepad spielt es sich großartig und das asynchrone Gameplay bei z.B. Nintendoland habe ich bereits ausgiebig mit 3 Freunden getestet. Das riesige Potential darin bemerkt man, da so ein simples Minispiel wie Mario Chase (im Prinzip 'Fangen') solch einen großen Spaß macht, dass wir mehr als 20 Runden hintereinander gespielt haben, bevor wir uns dem nächsten ähnlich lustigen Spiel gewidment haben (Name fällt mir jetzt nicht mehr ein, aber war das Geisterspiel bei Nintendoland). Im Einzelspieler empfand ich die Einbindung des Gamepads bei ZombieU und Trine2 ebenfalls sehr gelungen.
Grundsätzlich kann ich die Wii U daher zum einen jedem empfehlen, der Interesse an einer Partykonsole hat, da durch das asynchrone Gameplay ein immenses Potential vorhanden ist, zum anderen (so werde ich es auch machen) kann man die Wii U aufgrund der nach momentanem Wissen komplett anderen Steuerung wunderbar als Zweitkonsole neben einer Xbox oder Playstation nutzen.
Von daher von mir eine absolute Kaufempfehlung, wenn man bereits mit der Wii Spaß hatte oder Interesse an asynchronem Gameplay hat
