Product description

On 22 November 2024, Kim Deal will release her new album, Nobody Loves You More. Featuring recent single ‘Coast’, the collection of 11 songs is the Dayton, Ohio resident’s first full-length album under her own name. Nobody Loves You More is Kim Deal’s debut album although it’s not the first time she has gone solo – she self-released a five-part, ten-song seven-inch vinyl series in 2013. In keeping with Deal’s meticulous approach to her art, the album was refined over several years. Its oldest songs, ‘Are You Mine?’ and ‘Wish I Was’, were written and originally recorded in 2011 shortly after Deal came off the Pixies’ “Lost Cities Tour” and relocated to Los Angeles (early versions of those songs were included in said vinyl series); the last recording for Nobody Loves You More took place in November 2022 with legendary engineer and close friend Steve Albini, who helmed final track ‘A Good Time Pushed’ at his Electrical Audio studio in Chicago. Along the way she has brought in a variety of collaborators from Breeders past and present (Mando Lopez, twin sister Kelley Deal, Jim Macpherson, Britt Walford), to Raymond McGinley (Teenage Fanclub), Jack Lawrence (Raconteurs) and Savages’ Fay Milton and Ayse Hassan. Nobody Loves You More was mixed by Marta Salogni and mastered by Heba Kadry. Every song has a story behind it, from the winter vacations with her parents in Florida Keys (‘Summerland’), wedding band covers of ‘Margaritaville’ (‘Coast’) to her mother’s dementia (‘Are You Mine?’). All in all, the record is a celebration of Deal’s unmatched artistry, nodding not only to her career highlights with celebrated bands across the alternative landscape (Pixies, The Amps, The Breeders), but also to her immovable cultural weight influencing musicians like Kurt Cobain and Olivia Rodrigo through the generations.

Beautifully crafted tunes which could well be a career high from an artist that has influenced so many others and delighted the listener in equal measure due to her output in Pixies, the Breeders and the Amps. If this is the only solo offering she puts out there, it will stand as a fitting testament's to her sheer brilliance. Thanks Kim.

Fine collection of musically varied songs.I especially liked the title track.

I bought the album after reading a five star review in Mojo. Totally agree with the review, it's an excellent album. A mixture of styles with a couple very reminiscent of Velvet Underground.

Pixies were a shining beacon throughout my teenage years and beyond. Those first 4 1/2 albums are masterpieces. Yes, Bossonova is a slightly dip in brilliance and Trompe Le Monde has peaks and troughs like a martian landscape. But they were an untouchable band in my eyes.

I've given the reunion years largely a wide berth. Although I do quite like Chicken.
Frank's solo albums are patchy with the odd glimpse of genius.

The only former member who has continued to excel is Kim Deal. Nobody Loves You More feels like a distillation of all her best elements.
Are You Mine? is even more moving once you've read about its inspiration.
Coast is pure shimmer, catchy as.
Crystal Breath & Big Ben Beat are as uncompromising as anything from Mountain Battles.
A Good Time Pushed would have been a Last Splash highlight.
An absolute delight and a fitting tribute to the great Steve Albini who engineered and produced the majority of these tracks.

Very few identifiable songs on here. I appreciate verse/chorus/verse isn't necessarily Deal's thing, but this is just meandering, like she's playing chords and improvising a stream of consciousness over the top. Some references to ageing and living the life she has, but it lacks impact.

Musically, a lot of the songs sound dressed-up by the producer. It's clear that the basic guitar tracks aren't particularly interesting, so all sorts of instrumentation has been thrown on, in order to pad it out.

All in all it's a let down. One track runs into the next, with the production the only way to identify one from another, and then not in every case. She'll need a good band for this not to be a very flat live experience.

This feels a very long way from Pod and The Last Splash. Disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Modern Pop Genius
Reviewed in the United States on 23 November 2024
We have always been big fans of Kim Deal, since her earliest contributions as founding member of the Pixies, playing bass and vocals on their earliest releases, 1987’s Come On Pilgrim EP, the Surfer Rosa, Doolittle, Bossanova and Tromp le Monde LPs and various other singles and compilations in between, to her role as leader of her equally if not more brilliant outfit, The Breeders, she has always shown a natural and effortless understanding of what sounds cool, her seamless command of basic pop song structures that kicks you in the seat of your pants, with bulletproof arrangements, soaring vocals and beach pop dynamics, widely evident in The Breeders’ 1990 debut Pod, 1992’s Safari EP and 1993’s masterful Last Splash. Her first long player as a solo artist, Nobody Loves You More, continues this brilliance with her trademark coastal flourishes and vocal harmonies, sounding like nothing short of the workings of a modern pop genius, from the pseudo symphonic big band ballad of the title track to the soothing horns of Coast, a reworking of her previously self-released seven inch Are You Mine and the throbbing pop racket of Crystal Breath and Big Ben Beat, this album is loaded with everything we love about Kim Deal. By the end of the closer, the rollicking A Good Time Pushed, we find ourselves wishing it were longer and that it didn’t end, which just goes to show the genius of this album, how the music puts the listener in a mood, in a time and place that remain at odds with reality, we were indeed having a good time

5.0 out of 5 stars I was waiting this solo album since the nineties!
Reviewed in the United States on 29 December 2024
I love Kim and have waited for this solo album since the 90's! I knew she could cover a greater ground, more than Pixies and Breeders. This lovely album confirms my hopes. This is an excellent picture of her mind, skills, and sensibilities. Thank you, beautiful Kim!
All the best from Lima, Peru.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rock is not dead!
Reviewed in the United States on 6 December 2024
As a fan of The Breeders I knew I should give this a try and ordered as soon as released. It’s a really good album with a couple different sounds - cool vocals, atmospheric textures and some surprising stuff along the way. We had to wait for this solo album for a long time but it was worth the wait! If you’re in need of some refreshing rock music without the bland, auto tune, synthesizer heavy music that makes up the bulk of today’s sounds, this just might be it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Stunning Solo Debut
Reviewed in the United States on 11 December 2024
This is an excellent and highly original set of songs. The record has not left my turntable for days.

Kim wrote all of the songs, played a good portion of the instruments, and co-produced with Steve Albini.

What a relief great music is still being released in 2024. Thank you, Kim!
