I got this for mixing resins for pouring into molds, etc..

For thin consistency resins this works great.

For more viscous resins, I find it is not really usauble and struggles to spin the stirrer. I eventually gave up on it and purchased a hand-held resin mixer that is much better for more viscous shallow-pour resins.

It arrived with everything I needed to get started except for a liquid mixing vessel, though you can use almost anything that fits on the platform. You get a bunch of sizes of PTFE/Teflon coated magnetic bars for stirring the liquids and they’ve even included a magnet on a stick which is also coated in PTFE/Teflon for grabbing the stir bars out of the liquid. The PTFE lining on the stick and stir bars mean they’re simple to clean, very slippy and boast excellent chemical resistance and are unlikely to react with anything you’re mixing.

I use these magnetic stirrers for mixing up larger quantities of liquids for various hobbies and as a cleaning aid for resin 3D printing. When a resin print is done I need to clean the surface of the printed part using a solvent or cleaning product, although simply plopping the piece into the liquid does pretty much nothing. This magnetic stirrer agitates the liquid very well and does a fabulous job of removing the excess resin in a few minutes and it doesn’t require manual scrubbing at all. I just have to place the container on the mixer and turn it on. I’ve had vessels with 2.5litres of water in them being effortlessly spun by this little mixer so it does have plenty of power.

It's a small and low wattage unit so it doesn’t have enough magnetic hold or enough oomph in the motor to spin thicker and more viscous mixes, meaning this is strictly made for the thinner liquids out there. Though it doesn't necessarily have to be as thin as water, it can handle a bit of resistance from thicker material within reason.

If you have a need for a small magnetic stirrer this is an excellent choice and is well worth considering. It can be used for a variety of projects & applications that require agitation or thorough mixing and the best part is you can leave it running and go do something else.

At first glance this might seem way more expensive than a lot of the alternatives but it comes with stir bars and the magnetic grabber by default which you often have to buy separately for the cheaper units. You can get similar units directly from China for cheaper but you’ll have no customer support at all and you’ll be waiting weeks for it to arrive. This one from ONiLAB works well and is what I’d personally consider to be reasonably priced especially with the current 10% off voucher. Which brings it down from £41.99 to £37.80 at the time of writing.

One thing I hadn't realised initially was this only works for low viscosity liquids. Even the slightest thickness in texture can prevent the unit from doing it's job. I've played around with this for lots of things including helping me stir some powder drink mix into water while I get other tasks done! I've also tried making a fun wizard style potion effect by adding some old shimmery powder eyeshadow to a bottle of water and letting it stir to create the most beautiful "living" shimmer swirls. Perfect as a Halloween prop!

Clean up is easy. The magnet is straightforward to remove and clean. The actual mixer hasn't gotten majorly dirty but I've taken a microfibre cloth to clean up any light residue on the unit (very rare). It works well even for non science people. It's just a shame it only really works for very lightweight liquids.

This magnetic stirrer arrived in a plain cardboard box and includes the magnetic stirrer, power cable with 3 pin plug, x4 adhesive stickers with images on which I assume is to protect the surface of the magnetic stirrer, a 25cm long retriever bar and a set of x8 different length magnetic stirring bars.

The magnetic stirrer measures 15cm x 14.4cm x 5.4cm which is a reasonably small footprint for the amount of liquid that the stirrer can mix. The lightweight stirrer is ideal for transportability and has a good built quality and is made from chemical resistant materials with is easy to clean down. I chose the square version of the magnetic stirrer but there is a circular version as well which appears to be cheaper (I am a little unsure of the difference between them).

The stirrer uses a brushless DC motor that offers a continuous variable speed of between 300-2000rpm which is adjustable through the single dial on the front of the machine. It stirs thoroughly and the dial has a smooth action meaning it is very easy to control the speed. It has a blue LED light to indicate when the machine is on and the magnetic stirrer is very quiet when in operation. The longer the chosen magnetic stirring element the more of a vortex effect you get and therefore a better and stronger stirring effect.

It is worth noting that this particular magnetic stirrer does not heat the liquid nor is it for thick liquids but it can mix up to a maximum capacity of 3 litres which is quite impressive. I am using this magnetic stirrer for mixing airbrush paints which have a reasonably thin consistency and using this method prevents unnecessary bubbles which can cause spluttering when spraying, but the magnetic stirrer can be used for plenty of applications requiring agitation. I am using a small plastic cup to mix the paint in but equally glass can be used (bear in mind no vessels for mixing are included and you can’t use metal for obvious reasons).

Priced at £37.79 (with an additional 10% off voucher valid until the 15th August 2023) at the time of reviewing, this is a neat little system which I feel is primarily aimed at the scientific market but is ideal for mixing up my airbrush paints.
