In spite of the various crises that have occurred since 2017’s Native Invader, Tori Amos has emerged with Ocean to Ocean, her most personal work in years – an album bursting with warmth and connection, with deep roots in her earliest song writing.

Written during the 3rd Lockdown in Cornwall this year, Ocean to Ocean is a universal story of going to rock bottom and renewing yourself all over again.

For a record written within limited surroundings, two things are remarkable – its rich stylistic variation, from tango to wide-screen romance, and the big-heartedness of songs, which run almost like a series of love letters to family both present and absent. It is, in one sense, her most Cornish record yet: the artwork says it all, with Amos shot on the cliffs, and in the caves on the county’s south west shores.

Ocean to Ocean is probably the album that is most akin to her older albums, from Little Earthquakes and Under the Pink running up to Scarlet's Walk and The Beekeeper. I'm a big fan of Tori, but after Scarlet's Walk and The Beekeeper I found the music more difficult to listen to and enjoy - it just didn't resonate with me like her ealier work did. However, Ocean to Ocean is a return to that sound, the melodies and the piano. It's an album that is full of emotion, which Tori conveys so beautifully in both words and song. Ocean to Ocean is a gorgeous flow, Speaking With Trees is a earworm in a good way (and is beautiful and heartfelt), Metal Water Wood is very Kate Bush (a good thing), 29 years something that most women can connect with on a certain level, Devil's Bane reaching for that religious jugular - I loved every song except for Spies, which feels a bit thrown in at the last minute. All in all, Tori's older fans will love this album.

If someone asked longtime Toriphiles what their favourite T albums are, the vast majority would choose from among her early ones: the shattering "Earthquakes", the magnificent "Pink", the explosive "Pele", the mesmerising "Choirgirl", the stellar "Venus", the stunning "Scarlet". Every subsequent release never quite matched those past heights of excellence, although they all exhibit flashes of brilliance, new sounds or variations in the thematology or concept.

New Tori sounds refreshed, with this short - for her standards - and cohesive set, evidently inspired by the global pandemic as well as the passing of her mother. Even though personally I will always want her to be raw, venomous, and cathartic, I appreciate every offering by her for what it is. 2 decades later Tori is in a different place, still the same woman but the 2021 version (like every one of us basically). Do yourselves a favour and listen to the new tracks with a open mind. Oceanic Tori is beautiful, she really is. Just like the generous 28-page booklet that comes with the digipack CD, just as generous she has always been with her music.

First thing, the song lyrics and music are atypical Tori. A real enjoyment to listen to.
Secondly the vinyl sounds better than the cd. The digital version sounds very bright and distorted (even though played on one of the best digital front ends currently available costing 50k for transport and DAC ) into a reference sound system.
Thirdly, try working out the order of play from the accompanying booklet. The songs are in fact juxtaposed and do not conform to the printed order of play. No doubt Tori wants to ensure you are paying attention.
If she could now pay attention to the quality of her music reproduction that would put a cherry on her offering.

Tori Amos has one of the most beautiful voices in modern music. She also writes some pretty amazing songs to go along with with her songbird like vocals. I was reminded of that when I picked up her 2020 "Christmastide" album this past holiday season. It had been a while since I had bought anything by her before that - 2002's "Scarlet's Walk" to be exact. With that album being influenced heavily a world changed by 9/11, it seemed natural to pick up ""Ocean to Ocean", an album written and recorded in the wake of a world even more drastically changed by the Covid-19 epidemic.

To be honest, I was actually looking for one of Tori's earlier albums from the '90s and early 2000s on vinyl when I read that "Ocean to Ocean", which came out last October on CD and streaming only, was going to be released on my favorite medium. But all the pieces fit together too perfectly. I wasn't going to buy an earlier Tori Amos album, I was going to pre-order her newest one.

The pieces all fitting together perfectly. That's "Ocean to Oceans" broken down to its simplest. An angelic voice soaring and diving through lyrics that contrast and compliment the music accompanying them both. Other than "Christmastide", it's been almost 20 years and 10 albums since I've listened to anything new from Tori Amos. I've missed her. It won't happen again.
