Overlooking this band is soooooo easy. Listening to their 80s albums is probably why you might do this. They are not great. Alone track aside (love it!) The albums are very much typical if that cheesy commercialism gone wrong with a dodgy rocking perm you would often see in the 80s.....
Hearts first albums on the other hand are simply magnificent. Before going dodgy not really heavy and slightly sanctimonious, Heart were a great folky rock country pop band. Great songs. Great singers. Great music. But wow the albums as a whole are beautifully constructed and have that great 70s production quality. Dog & Butterfly is a great example of this ....what a surprise this album was. I've been playing it for a year or so now and I just love it. Starts with a live number that is such a great choice as it leads into some beautiful and sometimes warmly empowering numbers, full of gorgeous guitar work and a drum set that hits you in your central nervous system every time. Such a great warm sound.
I recommend getting this set for the first 3 albums the Debut....ewwwww Barracuda!!, Dog &Butterfly and Bebe Le Strange. Also get Dreamboat Annie which is essential and sadly not in this set. There are soooo many great sets in this series and if this had contained Dreamboat Annie instead of one of the other two fine....but maybe getting a hint of that less essential cheesy 80s albums element (but still good!)... I'm pretty sure it would be top or even no.1 in my classic album series box sets.
So get to it! Early Heart is simply fantastic.
