I feel slightly old and saying that I remember when the PlayStation one was released along the lines of the Nintendo 64 and other such consoles around the turn of the millennium and just before I remember seeing things like Microsoft flight simulator having joysticks with various different controls that were really great to use, but just either really crap quite frankly also so very very expensive.

Technology has moved on quite nicely over the last couple of decades and now fully accessible to the masses given that you can get a steering wheel against it and a triple pedal system for this price is really good value for money and it offers a new dynamic gaming experience for those that are into racing simulator games.

This is so much fun! Be advised that it ships in a pretty large box, so you want to be sure you can either install it right away or have enough space to accommodate the package.

Without feeling particularly premium, the product is solid. There’s a lot of plastic, but it never made me feel like it would fall apart in my hands. The design is fairly neutral, mostly black and gray, with Xbox-themed buttons on the steering wheel. There’s a pair of gauges on the wheel that light up as you press the brake pedal or accelerator, plus mode lights.

There are various suction cups and clamps to attach the steering wheel and the shifter to the table. It seemed like the front suction cups were right at the edge of the table when I did that, but the wheel mostly stayed in place without concerns.

The steering wheel supports multiple input modes, for compatibility with Xbox, PC, PS4, etc., and there is an app that connects to it via Bluetooth and can do remappings, mode changes, as well as a self-test.
I learned from the self-test that there’s an optional car dashboard accessory (e.g. with engine start-stop buttons, etc.). Everything connects to the wheel via USB-C connectors, and the wheel itself connects to the PC. I haven’t tried connecting the accessories directly to the computer, so no idea if they’re standard USB devices that you could use individually (though it would have been fun to use that shifter to activate macros in Excel).

I didn’t have much on my PC in the way of racing games, but I wanted one that also supports VR, so I tried the wheel in Dirt Rally 2. It took me a bit to figure out how to get the various wheel buttons to work with the game, but I was able to use DINPUT and configure various bindings in the game itself. The pedals are analog, and the game recognizes them as such. Each gear shift position maps to a different input, so the game knows what to do with it. I used the self-test in the Android app as well to ensure all the buttons worked; no surprises or issues there. I only went so far as to cover the basics and make the car driveable, but there’s a few extra buttons on the front you can configure for e.g. looking backwards, turning on the engine, etc., as well as a joystick and a standard ABXY set. You can also configure how much you can turn the wheel, switching between 270 deg and 900 deg (default).

I don't drive in real life; but, according to other people who tried it, everything feels 'as expected' from driving actual cars. Apparently, muscle memory kicks in fairly quickly and you're able to use the pedals and shifter as you would in real life. The steering wheel feels natural. Personally, I just enjoyed the experience. I’m not actually good at these games in the first place, and I imagine you don’t get the same feedback you would from an actual car; either way, I stalled the engine a bunch of times, drove into trees, etc., but it was super fun, and I never felt like the steering wheel set would be the limiting factor. It responded as I thought it would.

There’s a deadzone on the wheel which I assume is configurable (e.g. how far you turn it before the game responds to it; that’s usually so that you don’t have any drift when you’re not turning the wheel at all). I saw in the booklet that the pedals have hall effect sensors, which should make them fairly accurate (in practice, they felt accurate, like I could control my speed as I intended to).

The shifter has 6+R gears in the usual H pattern. You put it in reverse by pressing down on it and going towards where the 6th gear would be. It has a Low/High gear mode button, as well as a parking brake button. It felt 'normal' in use. Not premium, but not flimsy. There’s a rubber membrane covering the mechanism, like you would have seen in some cars, and the gears are marked on the handle at the top of the stick (not sure what the right terminology is). There are paddle shifters on the wheel itself if you want a semi-automatic transmission rather than using the clutch (and I reckon various other modes depending on the game).

If you’re not prone to VR sickness, it could be super fun to try this together with a VR headset. Everything feels a lot more real, like you’re literally inside a car. I was feeling a bit queasy after an hour, but I loved the experience—it made it so much more immersive!

Again, the box is pretty huge, and the product is fairly large as well (as expected). Setting it up is the expected amount of fiddly (three clamps in total + three cables to connect). Putting it back in the box is unpleasant because there are a bunch of various cardboard inserts and stuff, so you’ll probably throw away the box and just keep the wheel on a shelf if you’re not actively using it. I wish it had come with some sort of soft carry case to make things a bit easier.

Overall, and especially for the price, this feels like a great introduction to PC racing with an analog steering wheel. It was the first time I tried something like it, and I wasn’t disappointed! I don’t have anything to compare it with, but it seems like it would be a great gift for someone who is or might be into racing games (and I’m fairly sure you can, with the right app, use it for things like improving your parallel parking skills).
