Product description
Band of Brothers
Based on the best seller by Stephen E. Ambrose, Band of Brothers tells the story of Easy Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, U.S. Army. Drawn from interviews with survivors of Easy Company, as well as soldiers’ journals and letters, Band of Brothers chronicles the experiences of these men, who knew extraordinary bravery and extraordinary fear. They were an elite rifle company parachuting into France early on D-Day morning, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge and capturing Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest at Berchtesgaden. They were also a unit that suffered 150 percent casualties, and whose lives became legend.
The Pacific
From executive producers Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman, The Pacific tracks the real-life journeys of three U.S. Marines – Robert Leckie (James Badge Dale), Eugene Sledge (Joe Mazzello) and John Basilone (Jon Seda) – across the vast canvas of the Pacific theater during World War II. The miniseries follows these men and their fellow Marines from their first battle with the Japanese in Guadalcanal, through the rain forests of Cape Gloucester and the strongholds of Peleliu, across the bloody sands of Iwo Jima, through the horror of Okinawa, and finally to their triumphant but uneasy return home after V-J Day.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 November 2024Both excellent programmes.
I watched them when on the TV and a couple of times on DVD
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 November 2011This has to be one of the best value for money box sets you can get (£37 at the time of writing). I already owned Band of Brothers on dvd and was going to buy the Pacific on blu ray but thought i may as well upscale BoB at the same time for a few more quid.
I was pleased I did.
The black case is not just a slip containing two tins as i thought it might be, its a good case containing the two series in their own inserts as well as a passport style case with a bonus disc with a documentary called "He has seen war".
If anybody has not seen these series before they are, in my opinion, one of the best things that have ever been on telly. In terms of war films i like saving private ryan, the thin red line, battle of britain and platoon, so that should give you some idea if you share my tastes.
As each series contain ten episodes you get a chance to really get interested in the characters and to care about their plights. This adds a dimension that you don't really get with films.
There are really powerful moments that make you stop to think how brutal the war must have been, and others (such as the liberation of the death camp) that show you some of the autrocities people could commit against their fellow man.
The thing that sets these apart for me is the interviews with surviving veterans at the start of each episode. There is one interview where an ex US soldier talks about how he felt engaging with the enemy and being ordered to kill someone who, in another situation, he may have been friends with. At times these interviews can be moving as they recall the horrors they lived through and the friends they lost. Nothing could set the scene for the episode more beautifully.
The series scrubs up very well on blu ray, the d day drops and the battle in Carentarn in particular are stunning.
The bonus documentary was a plesant surprise, and gives a really good account of how the heroes of easy company struggled to get back to the normality of everyday life. I never thought about how difficult it must have been to resume your life after having served in a World War, it is really well made and gives the whole thing an even greater personal element.
I actually watched that this evening, i thought it was apt given today is 11.11, and i know have even greater respect for those we remembered today.
I know i've gone on a bit but in summary, brilliant piece of telly, i slightly prefer BoB to the Pacific, and this should be given to A-level history students to watch as homework.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 July 2024Hard Gripping, fantastically told. One of the best war series there is. Brilliant boxset of both The Pacific and Band of Brothers. Real value for money!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 July 2024Brilliant well worth a watch again
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 May 2024These are some of the best series you could chose to watch, they are epic with amazing cinematography, great casting and the storytelling is awsome.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 May 2024Fantastic war series with good storylines great characters and realistic special effects
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 January 2012Having read a lot of Stephen Ambrose's books, I was thrilled to work and appear in several Band Of Brothers episodes in Hatfield, UK back in 2001 and have to say it is the single most enjoyable time working on films. It was simply amazing.
When the series was released on TV I sat there eagerly awaiting and wasn't dissapointed. Having it on Blu ray just makes it even better.
When The Pacific was announced I was slightly apprehensive, thinking there was no way they could better Band Of Brothers. In a way they didn't, it perhaps fell slightly short of a lot of peoples expectations. The series as a whole is a lot more shocking and gruesome than Band of Brothers, and it seems to lack a little cohesiveness. Nonetheless I was enthralled by the series and went out to by Robert Leckie's - Helmet for my pillow and Eugene Sledge's - With the Old Breed. Both books amazing and I would thoroughly recommend them.
I was dissapointed when this box set arrived as it had been damaged and torn on the outer covering, this was not caused by postage it was packaged that way, which annoyed me, however ÍøÆغÚÁÏ kindly offered me a partial refund which was a pleasant surprise.
Overall this is superb box set giving you 20 hours of the closest action you can get to what life was like for American troops during WW2. It would be nice if someone filmed a feature length series about the German side of things.

4.0 out of 5 stars Verpakking had wel iets beter gemogen

5.0 out of 5 stars brillante série !
